HARTFORD, Conn. - The 14th-seeded Navy squash team (17-10) fell short in its final match at the College Squash Association Team Championship, dropping a 5-4 decision to 13th-seeded Williams on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Mids finished the season ranked 16th nationally.
"It was a disappointing three days for us," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "I really feel bad for our seniors who have had a a great four years here at the Academy and a good year this year, but we just didn't have a good weekend."
Navy sophomore Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.) was the lone player to put together a flawless 3-0 mark on the weekend, as he scored a 3-0 sweep against Williams' Michael Petrick, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 at the No. 7 slot. Whitney, who is now 4-2 in matches at the CSA Team Championship over the last two years, closes out his season with a 15-8 record.
Senior Andrew McGuinness (Merion Station, Pa.) avenged an earlier loss this season to Williams' Robert Ruggiero, a product of the same high school as McGuinness, Episcopal Academy. McGuinness was swept by Ruggiero during the regular season, but the Navy team captain produced an 11-5, 12-10, 11-9 victory over the Williams sophomore on Sunday. McGuinness, who will likely play in the CSA Individual Championship next weekend, has posted a 16-10 record this year and a 73-42 mark over his four seasons.
Fellow senior Jim Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) earned his second victory of the year over Williams senior Chris Wilkinson. Kacergis won in five during the regular season, but picked up today's win in four games, 11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6. Kacergis posted a 16-7 record this season and a 72-39 mark over his four years at the Academy.
The final win of the day for the Mids was by freshman Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.), who earned his first win at the CSA Team Championship. McCartney swept Jamie Havran in the regular season at the No. 9 spot and came back to beat him in four games on Sunday at the No. 8 position.
Navy junior Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) dropped a heartbreaker to Galen Squiers at the No. 5 position. Kacergis won the first two games, but Squiers came roaring back to even the match with back-to-back wins. Squiers capped the comeback victory in the fifth with a 15-13 win. Meanwhile, sophomore Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.) also fell short in a five-gamer to Varun Sharma at the No. 9 slot. The two exchanged victories with Sharma closing out the victory with a 12-10 decision in the fifth.
The CSA Individual Championship will be held next Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Princeton.
