March 13, 2015 FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Dan Jonas concluded the 2014-15 season for the Navy rifle program with a 23rd place showing at the NCAA Smallbore Rifle Championship late Friday night at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Shooting as one of 46 entrants in the smallbore field, Jonas recorded a score of 576.
"I'm really pleased with Dan's performance," remarked head coach Bill Kelley. "He shot his average today which under the pressures of an NCAA Championship is really impressive. A lot of shooters in the field today felt the pressure and you saw you that in their scores. Dan kept working and kept grinding and he came out with a very solid result. He was only five points out of qualifying of the event finals so that's really great."
Jonas' shoot on Friday consisted of rounds of 94 and 98 in the kneeling portion and 100 and 95 in the prone. He wrapped up the competition with scores of 94 and 95 in standing to record his 576-point total.
"Dan's performance provided a very good conclusion to the 2014-15 season for Navy rifle," said Kelley.
Murray State's Ben Estes was the top qualifier out of the opening round of the smallbore competition as he shot a 587. In the individual event finals, Rachel Martin of Nebraska won the title with a score of 453.3. Alaska's Ryan Anderson and Kentucky's Connor Davis rounded out the top-three with 452.6 and 441.3 results, respectively.
In the team portion of the smallbore shoot on Friday, the host Nanooks notched a 12-point advantage over West Virginia, 2,331 to 2,319.
