ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's track team defeated Army, 101-99, on the final event Saturday evening at Ingram Field. With the win, Navy grabbed the lead over Army, 15-14, in the outdoor Star meet all-time series.

"If there was one team with more heart than any other team in our program's history, I would confidently say it was this one after today's performance," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "Everyone rose to the occasion and it showed on the results as we had a handful of personal best performances."

With the meet down to the final event of the 4x400m relay, Army led Navy, 99-96. After the first two legs of each relay squad completeing their laps, Navy's third leg held a slight lead going in to the first turn. As Army's third leg began the first turn, the runner crossed over into the wrong lane and forced the judge of that turn to throw up the yellow flag, which indicated a lane violation. Despite Army finishing first in the race, the Black Knights received a disqualification of the race and Navy was awarded the full five points to capture the meet.

Navy tallied five events with 1-2 finishes, three on the track and two in the field.

On the track, senior Madeline Zell (2:17.33) and junior Christina Shawver (2:18.26) finished 1-2 in the 800m run with 0.93 seconds separating each other. Junior Meghan Harvey (Nottingham, Pa.) continued her successful season, finishing first in the 1500m run with a time of 4:38.11. Harvey's classmate Amanda Mulkey (Fallbrook, Calif.) crossed the tape at 4:41.97 to place second in the 1500m.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Navy grabbed the top three spots with senior Christina Blair (Peninsula, Ohio) finishing first with a mark of 11:16.40. Teammates Brenna McDannold and Paige Miller followed right behind Blair with times of 11:27.22 and 11:28.19, respectively.

Navy then picked up 1-2 finishes in both the long jump and triple jump. Leading the way for the Mids in the long jump was senior Sarah Barnum (West Covina, Calif) with a personal-best jump of 18ft-0.5in (5.5m). In the triple jump, junior Crystan McLymore (Raleigh, N.C.) grabbed the individual title with a personal-best mark of 39ft-5in (12.01m). Barnum tallied her second personal-best mark in the triple jump, finishing second at 38ft-0in (11.58m).

Junior Ashley Ross and freshman Brittan Burg finished first and third in the 400m dash with time of 58.33 and 59.2, respectively. Senior Sarah Bernhardt (Conshohocken, Pa.) edged out Army's Courtney Smith by .008 seconds to place first with a time of 1:03.00 (ECAC) in the 400m hurdles. Teammate Michelle Soto tallied a personal-best time of 1:06.48 for third place.

In the pole vault, senior Amanda Graham (Wakefield, R.I.) led Navy with a first-place mark of 12ft-5.5in (3.8m). Freshman Charlene Kearns picked up crucial points with a third-place personal-best performance of 11ft-11.75in (3.65m). Both of Graham's and Kearns' marks were ECAC qualifying performances.

Freshman Ashanti Curry (Jacksonville, N.C.) tallied a personal-best throw in the shot put with a mark of 44ft-3.25in (13.49m) for third place. Freshmen Frankie Gale and Eli Pecsok finished tied for second in the high jump with a mark of 5ft-3in (1.6m).

Navy will travel to the George Mason Invitational on Saturday in Fairfax, Virginia.
