NEWPORT, R.I. - The Navy intercollegiate women's sailing team placed 16th at the Sperry College Sailing Women's National Championship in Newport, R.I. this week. This year's championship was hosted by Brown University, Salve Regina University and the New York Yacht Club.

The Yale women won the national championship with 223 points, narrowly edging out Boston College (228) as the Gerald C. Miller Trophy came down to the final race of the regatta. Brown was third with 234 points, followed by Dartmouth (237) and College of Charleston (292).

Racing took place in Narragansett Bay off of Newport. The national championship began with two 14-team semifinals. Navy was placed in the Western Semifinal and spent the first two days of competition fighting for one of nine spots in the final round.

Racing began in moderate breeze, but quickly built to the 15-plus range. Temperatures hovered in the 60s and stayed that way throughout the first round - windy and chilly. In a tight battle, Navy finished eighth in the semifinal round to earn a berth into the 18-team final.

In the finals, the weather was more of the same - windy and chilly - and the 64 races sailed total in the championship pushed the competitors to their limits.

The conditions did not suit Navy's strengths and the Midshipmen wound up 16th overall.

Throughout the championship, senior Mary Hall skippered "A" Division with senior Emma Ferris, sophomore Molly Robertson and freshman Jillian Foley serving as crews. Sophomore Hannah Hughes skippered "B" division with senior Alex Asuncion, Ferris, Robertson and Foley serving as crew.

The Navy intercollegiate sailing team will continue the spring national championship season by competing in the ICSA Team Race Nationals from Friday to Sunday, followed by the ICSA Coed Dinghy Nationals from Monday to Thursday.
