SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Navy women's rowing team began the first of three days of competition at the 2015 NCAA Championships on Friday. Taking on a 22-team field on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, the Mids raced twice in varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events.

The first boat in the water for Navy on Friday was the varsity eight. Racing in the fourth heat, the Mids clocked in with a sixth-place time of 7:05.206. Navy came back in the afternoon and competed in the second repechage. The Mids cut 3.576 seconds off their original result with an improved time of 7:01.630, good for seventh place. The first varsity crew will move onto C/D semifinal action on Saturday at 8:40 a.m. local time (11:40 a.m. ET).

The second varsity eight was the second boat on the Lake Natoma on the day. In the morning's preliminary heat action, Navy finished sixth in heat number four with a time of 7:11.935. In the afternoon, the Mids raced in the second repechage and laid down a 7:19.698 time. Navy was seventh in the repechage. The second varsity crew will be on the water in the C/D semifinal on Saturday at 9:10 a.m. PT.

Navy's varsity four boat had the most success in Friday's preliminary and repechage action as it placed fourth in both races. In the morning's third heat, the Mids clocked in at 7:35.576 coming in ahead of USC (7:39.990) and Central Florida (8:08.506). In the repechage, Navy posted a 7:32.748 time. The Mids came in just 1.242 seconds behind third place, USC. Wisconsin (7:39.568), Gonzaga (7:47.157) and Jacksonville (8:46.590) all finished behind Navy. The varsity four crew will be in C/D semifinal action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. PT.
