May 31, 2015 Final Team Standings
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Navy lightweight rowing team concluded its 2014-15 campaign on Sunday at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Mercer Lake. Navy was competing with multiple boats in the national event for the second straight year and second time since 2011. After having two varsity four boats race on Saturday, the varsity eight crew took center stage on Sunday. The varsity boat raced in both a heat and petite final.
"The varsity eight had a very strong start, but was unable to maintain a stable rhythm through the racing in the heats this morning," said head coach Shawn Bagnall. "There was better attention to that aspect in the final, but we didn't quite row to our potential. With this group being primarily sophomores and freshman, there's a commitment to learning lessons from this past weekend and putting our best foot forward in 2016."
In the morning's preliminary heat, Navy finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:03.216 that left it one position shy of making the grand final in fourth place. Yale earned the final transfer spot with a third-place time of 5:56.514. In the petite final, MIT held off Navy for the race victory with a 5:51.994 to 5:55.152 result. The Engineers finished in seventh place overall nationally, as the Mids took eight place.
Navy's varsity eight lineup consisted of coxswain Madison Beiler, Kevin Leyland, Austin Bentley, Anlon McGuigan, Stephen Walsh, Jordan Spear, Austin Treubert, Andrew Schutta and Matthew Walsh.
When the results of both the weekend's varsity eight and varsity four competitions were compiled at the end of the day, Navy finished in seventh place overall nationally. MIT and Navy tied for sixth with 17 points, though the tie-breaker of higher finish in the varsity eight race gave the Engineers sixth place. Cornell and Columbia tied for the honors of top lightweight team with the Big Red's varsity eight victory giving them the outright title.
"It's been a very solid year with a steep learning curve, and we're thankful having earned the opportunity to end our season at the national championship," said Bagnall."
