May 31, 2015 Final Team Standings
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Navy women's rowing team completed its third day of competition at the NCAA Championships, as well as its season on Sunday with action in three final races on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center. The Mids' varsity four crew highlighted the program's three-day championship performance with a 17th-place overall showing.
"It was great to be a part of the NCAA Championship and we put forth a very good effort this weekend," remarked head coach Mike Hughes. "We are a little disappointed in our overall standings and wished that we could have performed better in a few spots, but we didn't. That doesn't take any of the luster off this great accomplishment to finish 21st in the nation."
Navy's varsity four boat earned the Mids their highest individual placement as they raced in the C Final for overall national spots 13 through 18. Indiana cruised to the victory in the final with a time of 7:42.162, but positions two through five were wide open and decided by 3.457 seconds. Harvard came in second at 7:50.049 before USC (7:51.698) and Wisconsin (7:51.978) held off Navy, who clocked in at 7:53.506, good for fifth.
Both the Mids' first and second varsity boats finished in third place in their respective D Finals to place 21st overall nationally. Navy's first crew came in third behind Northeastern (6:52.394) and UMass (6:56.967) with a time of 7:01.967. The second varsity crew finished with a 7:20.730 result behind Gonzaga (7:02.993) and Central Florida (7:12.407).
In the overall team standings, Ohio State came out on top with 126 points on the strength of 66 points for its varsity eight victory. California and Brown rounded out the top-three with totals of 114 and 112, respectively. Navy compiled 16 points to finish in 21st place, five points shy of 20th-place UMass.
"At the end of the year, we finished amongst the top 22 of 88 total NCAA D1 programs, that's a great accomplishment," said Hughes. "We know what we're up against at this national level and we're looking forward to coming back next year and improving our results. It's great to have competed here and we're very proud of everyone."
