NEWPORT, R.I. - In the second of three spring national collegiate sailing championships, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team finished ninth out of 16 teams at the Laser Performance College Sailing National Team Racing Championship. The event was held in Newport, R.I. and was hosted by Brown and Salve Regina Universities, along with the New York Yacht Club.
Yale had an overall record of 21-4 to win the Walter C. Wood trophy. Boston College was second, Stanford was third and College of Charleston was fourth.
After a windy and chilly week for the Women's Championship, team racing kicked off on Friday under a sunny sky with a light northerly breeze. The wind was so light in fact that the racing was delayed for a few hours to allow for more wind to fill in. Eventually, the breeze filled from the southeast and the first day of racing got underway in 5-10 knots. After a long day of close racing, the Midshipmen remained right in the hunt for a berth in the top-eight gold round.
On Saturday fog covered the racecourse early on, but receded just enough for racing to continue in the first round. Navy scored some solid wins early in the day and just needed to win the last race of the round against Wisconsin to move on to gold.
Things were looking good heading into mark three, until one of the Wisconsin Badgers snuck around all three Navy boats on the inside and sailed its team to victory. The loss put Navy into a tie with Tufts for eighth and the two teams sailed a tie break sailoff race to determine which team would advance to the gold round. In the sailoff, one of the Navy boats was called for a penalty at the start, putting it far behind the pack. The other two Navy boats sailed well up the first beat and almost broke away with a 1,2 combination and the win, but one Tufts boat was able to break the play up and, playing 3 on 2, maneuver its team into a winning combination before the third Navy boat could catch up and join in the fight.
Navy comes away with a ninth place finish and a day to rest and get ready for the main event of the spring championships, the Gill College Sailing National Fleet Racing Championship, which begins on Monday.
Patrick Snow, Mary Hall and Michael Popp served as skippers while Emma Ferris, Connor Hendi and Alex Asuncion were crew.
