The Navy intercollegiate sailing team kicked off the spring season Saturday and Sunday by hosting Old Dominion, St. Mary's and Georgetown for the Quad Team Race Scrimmage in Annapolis, Md.
An annual event for the teams to hone skills before spring regular-season competition begins in earnest, the scrimmage saw a Saturday with a beautiful day on the water, with the teams greeted to sunny skies, temperatures in the low 50s and a moderate northwest wind to start out the day. The nice weather lasted all day, but the wind was a bit more fickle, dying and re-filing from multiple directions throughout the afternoon. Despite the tricky conditions, the teams were able to complete a number of practice races and develop skills.
Sunday was quite the opposite, as a nice north easterly breeze came to race in, but much worse overall weather, as temperatures sat in the 30s and rain mixed with snow. Completing a round-robin in each fleet, the teams were able to shake off the rust while learning valuable lessons.
With no team scores on the weekend, the event was still a success as the teams got the opportunity to compete against other schools and log valuable time on the water that has been tough to come by so far this spring. The Navy team also showed great potential and strength throughout the roster, as the Mids are set to be more prepared for the coming spring slate.
