ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued the spring season this past weekend with a pair of team-racing regattas, keeping Midshipmen at home to place ninth at the Jen Harris Spring Team Race in Annapolis while having another group take fourth at the St. Mary's Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md.
Hosting the Jen Harris Team Race, Navy had 12 of the top women's teams from around the country meet in the first big women's team race regattas of the season. Light wind on Saturday and no wind on Sunday limited the total number of races completed, but race management was able to get just enough to count as an official event. Navy was up and down throughout the day but showed a lot of grit in keeping races close, as the highlight for the team was coming back late in the race to hand Brown its only loss on the weekend. Not enough races broke the same way for the Mids, however, as the team wound up ninth overall with a 3-6 record. Navy's skippers were senior
Ava Farley and juniors
Josie Sherry and Kate Zuinskas with crews of senior
Eleanor Niehoff, junior
Mary Dwyer and sophomore
Sarah McNelly.
Traveling in-state, Navy's co-ed group was in action at the highly-competitive St. Mary's Team Race, featuring a national field of 10 teams and tight racing, but light wind on Saturday allowed for only one round robin on the weekend. Navy had excellent starts and speed all weekend and displayed solid team racing skill, but too many unfortunate fouls kept the team out of contention for the win, however, as the team finished in fourth place with a 5-4 record. Sailing for the Mids were senior skippers
Nathan Smith and
Jack Welburn and junior skipper
Henry Allgeier with crews of seniors
Ellie Alex and
Darby Graham and junior
Fiona Cullen.
Navy now heads to New Orleans, La., this week for its spring break training trip before returning to Maryland for the Graham Hall Team Race and St. Mary's Women's Fleet Race on Saturday and Sunday.
