ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In the last competition of the college sailing regular season, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team traveled to Norfolk, Va. to compete in the MAISA Coed Fleet Racing Championship for the America Trophy.

The top 18 teams in the conference were on hand with nine berths to nationals on the line. The wind started out light to moderate and faded throughout the first day. The light conditions didn't allow for a lot of races to be completed and the standings were very tight throughout the fleet as a result. Navy sailed well enough to hold a qualifying position but the Midshipmen were eager to move up the leader board on Sunday.

Sunday had even lighter wind than the day before, but the Mids came out swinging, moving up to fourth place in the few races that were completed. Unfortunately, the wind ended up dying altogether and three races that the team finished were removed from the final standings due to procedural rules.

In the end, Navy finished seventh and secured a berth to Nationals.

Michael Popp, Patrick Snow, Alex Asuncion and Megan Hough sailed in A division while Mary Hall and Emma Ferris sailed B.

Navy has qualified for all three of the spring College Sailing National Championships for the third year in a row.

Navy will first compete in the ICSA Women's Nationals in Newport, R.I. from May 25-28. The ICSA Team Race Nationals are in Newport from May 29-31 and finally the ICSA Coed Dinghy Nationals are from June 1-4, also in Newport.
