AUSTIN, Texas - Texas posted a 4-0 victory over the Navy men's tennis team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. The ninth-ranked Longhorns (20-6) will play No. 26 Cal Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Mids, who were making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance as the Patriot League representative in the last nine years, sees their season come to an end with a 20-11 record. Six of Navy's 11 losses on the season were to teams that held a national ranking at some point on the year.
The match began with Texas recording a pair of wins to earn the doubles point. Nick Naumann and Michael Riechmann combined for an 8-3 win over Alex Gaines (Jr., Wilmington, N.C.) and Joshua Martin (Fr., Foley, Ala.) at the No. 3 flight, then Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen, the No. 19 doubles tandem in the country, rallied for an 8-5 victory over Austin Jones (Jr., Dallas, Texas) and Thomas Pecor (So., Houston, Texas) at No. 1 doubles. The Mids held leads of 3-2 and 5-4 in that latter match prior to the Longhorns winning the next four games.
"Texas came out playing very well in doubles," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Once our guys got their bearings we were able to compete better, but we couldn't come back from the early leads Texas had built. But Thomas and Austin were in their match right from the first point."
Texas then won a trio of singles matches in straight sets to close out the match.
"Texas has some big hitters in their singles lineup," said Garner of the Longhorns, who sent a pair of nationally ranked players into the singles portion of the dual.
Pecor carried over his strong play from doubles into singles as he was tied at 4-4 of his No. 4 singles match against Naumann before losing the frame, 6-4.
"Thomas played very aggressively today," said Garner. "He really dictated play in his matches."
The results of the day end the careers of Daniel and Mark. Daniel garnered a pair of all-league honors in his career while Mark earned first-team nods in each of his four seasons. Additionally, Mark holds the Navy record with 140 combined career dual match victories while Daniel ranks eighth on the list with 118 wins.
"What they have meant to the program," said Garner, "the example they have set in representing the Naval Academy and being part of the team, all they have done has been at a very high standard for the rest of the guys to look to and follow. We plan on continuing that environment."
