NEWPORT, R.I. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team wrapped up 11 straight days of competition in Newport by placing eighth at the College Sailing Coed National Championship on Thursday.
"This solid finish wraps up a good year all around for Navy sailing," said head coach Ian Burman. "Congratulations and thanks go out to our departing Ensigns. Our returners will vow to make 2015-2016 even better."
Yale won the team championship with 186 points, while Coast Guard was a distant second at 255. Boston College was third at 265. Yale won all three of the spring national championships.
The third and final championship was the Gill College Sailing Coed Nationals, where the top 36 teams in the country fought for the coveted Morss Trophy. The teams were split into two groups of 18 for the first round, which took place over the course of two rainy windy and cold days, with the top half in each group advancing on to the finals.
Navy survived the conditions and finished sixth in the round to move on. Mary Hall, Patrick Snow, Emma Ferris, Peter Hogan and Charlie Peck sailed A in the first round while Michael Popp, Alex Asuncion, Molly Robertson, Connor Hendi, and Philip Youngberg all saw action in B.
In the finals, the weather was much different, with sunny skies and light to moderate southeasterly winds throughout both days of competition. With all the top teams and the best players on the water, there was little margin for error. After two days of tight racing, Navy wound up eighth overall.
Mary Hall, Emma Ferris and Peter Hogan finished a solid fifth in A division while Michael Popp, Patrick Snow, Alex Asuncion and Molly Robertson were 14th in B.
During a trophy presentation on the lawn at New York Yacht Club, Hall was announced as a finalist for the Robert Hobbs Sportsman of the Year award.
