PHOENIX, Md. -- The Navy women's golf team opened the 2015-16 season by placing 15th out of 19 teams at the 36-hole Tignanelli Towson Invitational this Sunday and Monday at the Towson Golf and Country Club.
Navy had an overall score of 667 (+91), shooting a 326 (+38) on Sunday and a 341 (+53) on Monday. Navy was tied for 12th after the first 18 holes, but fell to 15th place following Monday's round.
"For our first tournament and not being able to play a lot this summer, the team played well," said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "Unfortunately the final scores weren't what we wanted to see, but it was a good warm-up for our home tournament this coming weekend."
Towson, the tournament host, won the team title with a two-round score of 618 (+42). The Tigers were followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (620) and Bethune-Cookman (627) in the top three.
Fairleigh Dickinson freshman Anneke Strobach was the individual medalist in the 95-player field with a 149 (74-75; +5).
Freshman Alexandra Oosting was Navy's top finisher in her collegiate debut. Oosting tied for 39th place with a 163 (80-83; +19).
"Alexandra had a bad break on Monday when she took an eight on No. 18, but other than that she played solid for her first collegiate tournament," said Ste-Marie. "She has lots of good golf ahead of her."
Senior team captain Renata Bucher was Navy's second best finisher, as she tied for 57th place with a 166 (83-83; +22). Sophomore Christine Walker was one shot behind Bucher, trying for 59th place with a 167 (80-87; +23).
Sophomore Mary Kate Nelson tied for 70th with a 171 (83-88; +27) and sophomore Legare Augenstein tied for 81st place with a 175 (87-88; +31).
Navy will next host the Chesapeake Bay Invitational this Saturday and Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
