Oct. 10, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two home events and one regatta on the road in a weekend of extreme weather conditions.
One of Navy's home events was the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship. The top 18 Laser Sailors in our conference were on hand competing for four coveted spots at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship.
Saturday was very rainy, with 6-12 knot Northeasterly winds. Sunday was very windy, steadily over 20 knots all day with gusts regularly hitting and occasionally exceeding 30 knots. Navy's Gary Prieto showed strength in the variety of conditions and finished fourth overall, good enough to punch his ticket to the nationals.
There was very similar conditions for the 14 teams who came to the Navy Fall Women's Regatta. Navy's sailed a solid event, finishing seventh overall. Hannah Hughes, Sarah Barkley and Brittney Slook finished seventh in A Division, Molly Robertson, Brittney Slook and Molly Hanson were seventh in B and Jessica McJones came in third in C.
Navy's away regatta was the Moody Trophy at Rhode Island. The first day was very light. The fleet was postponed due to lack of wind most of the day and only a few races were completed. On the second day, the wind filled in and increased to the point that racing was called off early. A young Navy team struggled with the conditions and finished 14th out of 17. Parker Loftus, Mary Morocco and Nicholas Gartner finished 13th in A division while Max Brill and Kent Mathes were 14th in B.
