Oct. 11, 2016 CENTER VALLEY, Pa. â€"â€" Three members of the Navy swimming and diving teams garnered weekly awards from the Patriot League on Tuesday. Marlin Brutkiewicz (Sr., Mobile, Ala.) and Lauren Barber (So., New Wilmington, Pa.) were selected as the league's swimmers of the week, while Bradley Buchter (Fr., Hickory, N.C.) was tabbed as the men's diver of the week.
Brutkiewicz and Buchter helped the Navy men's team to a pair of victories over George Mason (218.5-81.5) and UMBC (152.5-147.5) Friday in the squad's first meet of the season.
Brutkiewicz swept a trio of individual events against the Patriots and Retrievers, winning the 100 breaststroke (55.36), 200 breaststroke (2:02.86) and 200 individual medley events (1:51.94). He won each of the breaststroke events by over two seconds and the 200 IM by two-tenths of a second. Brutkiewicz also swam the breaststroke leg on Navy's winning 200 medley relay team. His clocking of 25.00 was the fastest of all breaststroke swimmers in the race by six-tenths of a second.
Buchter made an impressive collegiate debut by winning both boards during the meet. He posted a score of 347.70 to win the one meter (by nearly 37 points) and accrued 311.00 points to win the three meter (by 17.50 points). His score on the one meter qualified him for the 2017 NCAA Zone A Diving Championship (needed 300 points to qualify) and he missed qualifying for the meet on the three meter by nine points.
Barber, who competed at the 2016 NCAA Championship, totaled five individual events wins and one second-place showing in Navy's 187-106 win over George Mason and the team's 167-128 victory over UMBC. She first posted a time of 1:50.01 to win the 200 free by 2.21 seconds, then won the 100 free with her time of 51.49. Barber touched the wall one-half of a second before anyone else did in the race. She would go on to place second overall in the 200 individual medley with her posting of 2:04.14. Barber also swam the breaststroke leg on Navy's winning 200 medley relay team. Her clocking of 28.67 was tied for the best time recorded by any breast-stroke swimmer in the race.
