ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Andrew Hopkins scored the game-winning goal in the 65th to give the Navy men's soccer team (3-6-3) a 2-1 win over visiting Longwood (4-7-1) on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
"Longwood is a dangerous team," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "Every game has been even for us lately and tonight was no different. I felt we played really well for stretches and we have been playing much better lately. I'm proud of the guys and mostly I am happy we were able to get a result."
Navy opened the game's scoring in the 37th minute when junior defender Brock Dudley raced through the Longwood defense with the ball and then fired a low shot from 18 yards out. It was Dudley's first career goal.
Longwood knotted the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute when Finnlay Wyatt fed Max Poelker on an inside pass and then Poelker finished from 16 yards out. Wyatt and Poelker now each have a team-high 12 points this season.
The game was tied at 1-1 for only eight minutes, as Hopkins scored on a header off a corner kick serve from senior Sam Bascom. Hopkins' game-winner was his first career goal.
Longwood made a late push to draw even in the final six minutes. Navy goalkeeper Mac Burke made a nice save in the 84th minute on Wyatt, Sherif Maalouf had a shot go into the side netting with a minute left and then Wyatt had a shot go off the cross bar with just 21 seconds remaining in the game. Navy also successfully defended a corner kick as the final buzzer sounded.
Burke made three saves in the contest with Longwood goalkeeper Carlos Canas made two.
Longwood held a 13-12 advantage in shots and corner kicks were even at 7-7.
The Navy-Longwood series is now even at 4-4-0 and Navy has won two of the last three meetings.
Navy remains unbeaten at home this season at 2-0-2 and the Mids are 22-6-3 (.758) at home since the beginning of the 2013 season.
Navy will next host Bucknell (1-2-1 PL) on Saturday at 7:00 PM in a Patriot League match.
"If we can get a win Saturday then we can get right back into the Patriot League hunt," said O'Donohue.
