ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Sam Bascom and freshman Andrew Hopkins scored back-to-back goals in a span of 4:34 late in the second half to lead Navy (4-7-3) to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over visiting UMBC (4-6-3) in a non-conference men's soccer match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Tuesday evening.
"The guys played really well against a good team," said Navy's first-year head coach Tim O'Donohue. "We possessed really well and we had a lot of good chances. The guys work their tails off and they are a pleasure to coach. I'm really happy for the guys."
UMBC, just two seasons removed from reaching the 2014 College Cup Final Four, scored the game's opening goal in the 33nd minute. Colin Weyant carried the ball down the left sideline and then cut towards the middle and sent a pass to Sammy Kahsai, who finished to the left side of the goal from 18 yards out. It was Kahsai's third goal of the season.
Navy trailed, 1-0, for the next 37 minutes until breaking through with its two-goal spurt.
The Mids evened the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute when Bascom dribbled through multiple UMBC defenders, faking one way and then going the other, before finishing a low shot past UMBC keeper Billy Heavner. It was Bascom's team-high third goal of the season.
Just 4:24 later, junior Daniel Zaremba served a corner kick from the left side into the six-yard box. The ball was slightly deflected by a UMBC defender before Hopkins finished the shot to give Navy the 2-1 lead. Hopkins also scored the game-winning goal against Longwood in a 2-1 last week.
UMBC made a late push to even the game, but the Mids were able to hold off the Retrievers to earn a third-straight win in the series against its local rival. Navy extends its all-time lead against UMBC to 19-5-4.
Navy held a 14-6 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Bascom took a game-high five shots.
Heavner made four saves for UMBC while Navy goalkeeper Mac Burke stopped two shots.
Bascom played in his 72nd career game on Tuesday and moved into a tie for fourth place on Navy's all-time games played list with 2014 graduate Blake Busse and 2015 graduate Geoff Fries. Both players are former teammates of Bascom.
Bascom is Navy's active career leader in both points (23) and goals (7).
"We're getting better each game," said Bascom. "We are getting more dangerous and getting more chances each game. It felt good to put two in tonight. We are starting to put things together and its perfect timing because we need some wins in the games that are coming up."
Navy's final four games of the 2016 regular season will all be against Patriot League schools. Navy will next play at Colgate on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
The game against UMBC was Navy's final non-conference game of the 2016 season. Navy went 4-3-2 against non-conference foes this fall.
