ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€" The Navy men's soccer team (4-8-4, 0-5-2 PL) battled first-place American (8-5-4, 5-1-1 PL) to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in a Patriot League men's soccer match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Wednesday.
American is one spot out of this week's NSCAA Top 25 Poll as the highest point-receiving team in the 'also receiving votes' category.
"I thought we played well and I'm really proud of the guys," said Navy head coach Tim O'Donohue. "I thought we started well, but then American came back and started to get some opportunities. Then I thought we had really good opportunities in the second half and in overtime. I'm really happy how the group has come along and they played really well tonight."
Navy is now 3-1-3 in games at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility this season.
Navy came on strong late in the game and outshot American, 8-5, in the final 65 minutes of the second half and overtime. Navy outshot American, 5-1, in the two overtime periods.
American held an overall shot advantage of 11-10, while Navy led in corner kicks, 3-1.
Navy junior goalkeeper Mac Burke made three saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. He was supported by Navy's defensive backline of senior Mark Shiiba, junior Dylan Struthers and freshmen Diego Manrique and Andrew Hopkins. All four defenders played the full 110 minutes.
"We had good performances by Andrew Hopkins and Dylan Struthers at center back and our entire back four," said O'Donohue. "We had good possession tonight, we defended better and we pressed well. We are still lacking in getting that final finish and making that final play, but I'm really happy and proud of this group."
Lucas Belanger made three saves for American, earning his fifth shutout of the season.
American's Panos Nakhid took a team-high three shots. Nakhid had two of American's best scoring chances, hitting the right post in the 16th minute and seeing a shot go just wide right in the 82nd minute.
Navy had a great scoring chance in the first overtime period. In the 98th minute, the Mids earned two corner kicks in a span of 20 seconds. Freshman Piroz Bahar had a shot blocked and Manrique saw his shot go just high.
Manrique took a team-high three shots in the game.
American holds a 11-10-8 lead in the all-time series against Navy.
Navy played in its sixth overtime game of the season.
Senior Sam Bascom played in his 74th career game on Wednesday, tying 2014 graduate Dave Arnold for third place in the Navy record book for all-time games played.
Navy will host Lafayette on Saturday in its final home game of the regular season. Navy will conclude the 2016 season at Boston University next Friday. The Mids have been eliminated from contention for a berth in the Patriot League Tournament.
