Navy Drops Road Water Polo Match at George Washington

Oct. 29, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Navy water polo team fell in a road contest on Saturday afternoon at George Washington by a score of 15-7. A strong start to the game by the host Colonials (11-9, 6-1 MAWPC) saw the Mids (6-15, 1-7 MAWPC) fall behind by an eight-goal margin at halftime and find that it would be too much of a deficit to overcome in the second half of play at George Washington's Smith Center Pool. David Huber (Sr., Fort Washington, Pa.) led the visitors with four goals scored.

The game opened with an even first four minutes of action with each squad netting a score; George Washington at 6:09 and Navy at 4:18. Huber was the Mids' goal scorer. The host Colonials closed the first quarter with four unanswered tallies to go up 5-1.

The stretch of unanswered goals continued until five seconds remained in the second quarter and the score was 10-1. Just before the expiration of the second period Huber found the back of the net to make it 10-2.

The Mids solved the Colonials for their first multi-goal period in the third with scores by Gabe Gaspar (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Patrick Carmody (Sr., Fogelsville, Pa.).

Down 15-4, Navy outscored George Washington by a 3-0 margin in the fourth quarter to take the game final at 15-7. After Kevin Volkov (Fr., Freehold, N.J.) scored at 3:56, Huber scored twice for the Mids in the final 36 seconds.

In backup goalkeeping action, Brandon Shields (Fr., Lake Forest, Calif.) came off the bench to make a team-high five saves.

"Turnovers were our undoing, mainly in the form of our own missed opportunities," remarked Navy head coach Mladen Stanicic. "We continued competing down the stretch and ultimately won the four quarter, 3-0."

Navy will close out its regular season next Saturday with a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference doubleheader at home in Scott Natatorium. The Mids will host Johns Hopkins at 2:00 pm before matching up with George Washington at 7:00 pm.
