ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Following his 18th hole heroics that sealed the win for the Navy men's golf team over Army West Point in the annual Star Match last weekend, senior golfer Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) has been named the Naval Academy Athletic Association's Athlete of the Week.
Navy jumped out to a 3-1 lead after last Saturday's four-ball matches and needed just three points among the seven singles matches on Sunday to earn the Star win.
Army won the first two singles bouts of the day and leveled the match, while Navy junior Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) won the 18th hole against his foe Justin Pagila to halve the point as the two teams remained deadlocked at 3.5-3.5. The Mids went on to take a two-point advantage following wins by sophomore Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) (4&3) and team captain Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) (4&3). Tallman, who came into the weekend having never won a four-ball or singles match against the Black Knights in his four years, came away as the only Navy player to earn wins in both of his matches. Army, meanwhile, trimmed its deficit to one after Nick Turner edged out Navy rookie Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.), 2&1.
The match came down to the two players left on the course - Navy's Devin Terry and Army's Matt Plunkett. Terry was 2 down after 11 holes, but won 12 and 13 to get back to even. Plunkett won 14, but a key par by Terry on the 16th hole brought them back to all-square. Plunkett won the 17th to go up 1 with the final hole to decide the match. Should Terry win the hole, Navy would win the match, 6-5. However, if Plunkett pulled off the win on 18, it would force a playoff.
Both Plunkett and Terry were just short of the par 5 18th in two, but Plunkett failed to convert for par. This allowed Terry two putts from 10 feet to earn the winning half point. He calmly stroked it to inches from the cup to seal the Star.
It was Navy's first Star victory for this year's graduating seniors - Tallman, Terry and Ben Allen - and on Wednesday, Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk personally handed each of the three a star for their letter sweaters before they raised the Navy Golf flag on the Yard Arm.
The Midshipmen return to action this weekend when they travel to Baton Rouge, La. to take part in the David Toms Intercollegiate hosted by fourth-ranked LSU at the University Club Golf Course.
