Oct. 8, 2016

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy swimming and diving teams began their respective seasons Friday evening by defeating George Mason and UMBC in Lejeune Hall. Navy's women's team defeated the Patriots by the score of 187-106 and the Retrievers by the count of 167-128. In the men's meet, the Mids recorded a 218.5-81.5 victory over George Mason and a 152.5-147.5 win over UMBC.

"It was a good first meet for us," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "It was nice to get up there and race again."

"Kudos to UMBC for performing as they did," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "They have been through a lot (a recent men's swimmer passed away a week ago) and competed incredibly well tonight."

Navy's men's team placed first overall â€"â€" among the three teams â€"â€" in six events, with Marlin Brutkiewicz (Sr., Mobile, Ala.) earning a trio of victories. Brutkiewicz touched the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 55.36, the 200 breast with his posting of 2:02.86 and the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 1:51.94. He won the latter event by two-tenths of a second, but claimed each of the first two victories by over two seconds.

Earning the remaining two individual event wins for the Mids was Bradley Buchter (Fr., Hickory, N.C.), who won both the one-meter and three-meter springboard diving events. His score of 347.70 on the one meter gave him the win by 37 points, while he recorded an 18-point victory on the three meter with his winning score of 311.00.

"Our divers were exceptional," said Roberts. "Rich MacDonald and his divers did a really good job on the boards. They dove well and were the difference in the meet."

Navy also opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay.

In the women's meet, six of the eight individual event victories were recorded by freshmen. Maddie Runge (Fr., Cochranville, Pa.) won the 1000 free by two seconds with her time of 10:19.44 and the 500 free by six seconds with a time of 5:02.44. Classmate Delaney Walz (Fr., Mays Landing, N.J.) matched Runge's victory total as she won the 200 fly in a time of 2:04.80 (winning by nine-tenths of a second) and the 100 fly with a clocking of 56.73 (winning by one-half of a second). Madison Keiser (Fr., Southlake, Texas), another member of the Class of 2020, swept both the one-meter (217.45) and three-meter (218.55) diving events, winning the boards by a combined 23 points.

"Our freshmen really performed well for a first meet," said Morrison. "It was nice to see them race as they did."

Also winning a pair of events on the day was Lauren Barber (So., New Wilmington, Pa.). A swimmer in three events at the 2016 NCAA Championship, Barber won the 200 free (1:50.01) and 100 free (51.49) events today.

Navy's women's team also swept the two relay events.

Navy will be back in action Oct. 15 when it swims at East Carolina.
