Nov. 14, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three events this past weekend to close its fall season.
This year's Atlantic Coast Coed Championship was held on the Charles River in Boston and hosted by MIT, Harvard and Boston University. The top 18 eastern teams qualified to compete and the competition was very stiff. After a strong fall season, Navy was expecting a strong finish, but never really got going and had to settle for 14th overall. Patrick Snow and Mary Morocco finished 14th in A division while Gary Prieto and Ana Mier were 11th in B. Nicholas Gartner and Kent Mathes were also on hand.
The Atlantic Coast Women's Championship was in Charleston, S.C. and hosted by the College of Charleston. This was also an 18-team event and all of the top women were on hand to get some experience sailing at the venue that will host Nationals later this year. Navy started strong and led after the first set, but inconsistency on the starting line plagued the Midshipmen as they fell to 13th overall. Hannah Hughes, Brittney Slook and Emma Remis finished 15th in A division while Jessica McJones, Molly Robertson and Molly Hanson were 10th in B.
This year, it was Navy's turn to host the Atlantic Coast Tournament, which is contested by the top 16 teams that did not qualify for the coed ACCs. This year, the committee added some extra berths to the event due to the size of our fleet and were able to secure a berth for a Navy team in the process. In all, 19 teams attended and the racing was very tricky throughout the weekend. Navy was able to utilize a lot of different players and the team kept improving throughout the event to wind up 10th overall. Michael Madigan, Peter Hogan, Hamrick Morgan and Parker Loftus took turns skippering with Joshua Walton as crew in A Division to finish sixth. Spencer Nora, Jimmy Madigan, Tyler Fleig and Max Brill skippered with Karma Richards crewing in B Division for the 13th place finish.
