Nov. 4, 2016 Box Score
LEWISBURG, Pa. â€" Boston University (9-10-1) scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span late in the second half to defeat the Navy women's soccer team (9-11-2), 2-1, in the Patriot League Semifinal on Friday in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy and our team discipline was sound, especially getting that first score early", Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "When you play a team like Boston University, however, you need to be mentally focused for the entire 90 minutes, which was our downfall with a few mental lapses late in the game."
Following a scoreless first half, Navy broke open the scoring in the 65th minute. Junior Clare MacAdam (Palymra, N.J.) began the Mids counterattack behind the midfield line and sent a through ball deep into the Terriers' territory for sophomore Ash Fairow (Jacksonville, N.C.), who slipped past her defender and found herself one-on-one with Boston University goalkeeper Hannah Ciolek. Fairow took a few touches towards net and rifled her shot underneath the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.
Navy looked to put the match away in the 75th minute as sophomore Anabell Motley (Asheville, N.C.) was dribbling one-on-one with a Terrier defender. Motley moved to her right and sent her shot towards net, but just grazed the outside of the corner of the near post.
After a Navy foul, Boston University converted on its first set piece of the night to even the match, 1-1, in the 80th minute. Off a quick reset, Erin Neville sent a long ball from the midfield line to McKenna Doyle, who dribbled past one Navy defender, ran across the face of the net and beat Navy goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) high for the equalizer.
Two minutes later, the Terriers earned another free kick deep into Navy's territory. Boston University's Jesse Shreck sent the free kick deep into the box for teammate Erica Kosienski, who flicked the kick towards net for Julianna Chen. Chen gained possession of the ball and beat Wetherby to the near post for the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.
Boston University held statistical advantages over Navy in shots, 18-10, shots on goal, 8-6, and corner kicks, 6-3.
Wetherby finished the match with six saves on eight chances to finish 8-10-2 in net this season.
Fairow's goal in the 65th minute ended Navy's scoring drought of 561:12 minutes against Boston University.
Fairow and senior defender Cat Macklin (McLean, Va.), who scored the game winner against Colgate in the quarterfinals, were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament squad. Fairow earned her second-straight all-tournament honors, while Macklin garnered her first career nod.
Navy concluded its 2016 season at 9-11-2 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.
