ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Chiara Cosenza of the Navy women's soccer team is the first recipient of the NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by USAA. The senior forward was heavily involved in all of the Mids' offensive action this past week in contests versus Robert Morris and Rice.
In Wednesday's season-opening tilt against the Colonials, Cosenza made the most of her 43 minutes on the pitch as she had a hand directly or in-directly with all four of the Mids' goals as part of their 4-0 victory. The Westfield, New Jersey native's impact came early as she was taken down by Robert Morris' goalkeeper in the box in the 18th minute resulting in a penalty kick opportunity that
Jessica Black converted. In a tight 1-0 game, Cosenza led the charge for insurance goals in the second half as she drew a foul just outside of the 18-yard box to set up
Kayana Adlam's curling free kick into the upper-90 in the 56th minute. Less than two minutes later, she flicked on a pass to Black, who was aggressively tackled outside of the box for another dangerous free kick chance. This time,
Helen Bonner took the kick that rocketed off the goalie's chest beforeÂ
Lizzie Emerson collected the rebound and blasted home the loose ball to make it 3-0. Cosenza directly entered the box score in the waning seconds of the contest when she lofted a high arching corner kick into the box to
ClaraJane Williams, who powered home a header at 89:40 to seal the 4-0 win.
While falling to Rice in the finale of Navy's opening week of action on Saturday, Cosenza was still deeply involved in the action as she played 68 minutes and recorded two of the Mids' four total shots on goal versus the Owls.
Cosenza and the Mids will continue early-season action on Thursday night when they host the Falcons of Air Force in a service academy showdown. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
