Dec. 3, 2016 LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Juniors Drew Daniels (Overland Park, Kan.) and Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) advanced to the second day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, however, neither was able to qualify for placement rounds on Saturday as the tournament came to a close. Navy stood 26th with 17 points, one half point ahead of Cal Baptist and one piont ahead of West Virginia who each had one remaining wrestler in the competition.
"The Las Vegas event was a big test for the top ten guys in our room right now," said Navy third-year head coach Joel Sharratt. "It serves as a reminder to our veterans what 'All In Commitment' means, when to execute a leg attack or work line to line whistle to whistle. There is no doubt these young men are disappointed with the outcome, but we have to take the lessons learned and prepare most tenaciously for the future.
There are areas we have focused on in training that we did not execute in our performer this weekend. We gave our opponents free points laying on our belly and being hit for stabling and that, that is not acceptable by men wearing the Blue and Gold."
Daniels, who bumped up a weight class this season to 165 pounds, was tripped up by Cal Poly's Luke Wilson, 5-2, in his opening match of the tournament. The third-year starter battled his way back to win three straight matches on Friday evening to keep his hopes of placing alive. His journey back began with a 5-4 win over Utah Valley's Koy Wilkinson, followed by a 6-5 victory against Vincent Deprez of Binghamton. He won his final match of the evening by a 7-2 count over Central Michigan's Logan Parks.
Daniels' tournament came to a close in his opening match of Saturday, suffering a 9-0 setback against 20th-ranked Brandon Womack of Cornell.
Bernstein, meanwhile, turned aside Binghamton's Anthony Lombardo by major decision (10-2), before Purdue's Jake Morrissey got passed the nation's 11th-ranked wrestler by way of riding time. Bernstein scored the takedown to take the early 2-0 lead in the opening period against Morrissey before he earned a pair of points for escapes in the first and second period. Bernstein was unable to escape the grasp of Morrissey in the third as the Boilermaker rode him out and scored the upset.
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Bernstein rallied to win back-to-back matches against Edinboro's Ty Schoffstall (6-5) and Army's Ben Harvey (7-4) to advance to Saturday. After finding himself down 3-1 midway through the third period, Bernstein was able to get against 14th-ranked Nick Wanzek of Minnesota on the mat to knot the match at 3 with 1:18 to go. Wanzek, however, wiggled free just 10 seconds later for the go-ahead point in the 4-3 victory.
"There is a lot of wrestling left this season, but we need to start fixing baseline mistakes today," added Sharratt. "As a team, we will get better at executing the trademarks of Navy Wrestling and individually the challenge will to be resilient when faced with this result and modify performance behavior to put ourselves in position to win."
The Mids will be back in action next Friday when they face EIWA rival American in dual action at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore at 5:00 pm.
