Navy Defeats Springfield in Regular Season Finale

March 13, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Navy gymnastics team closed its 2016 regular season with a 414.75 to 404.15 victory over ECAC foe Springfield College on the road on Sunday. The No. 13 Mids (3-1) used standout turns on the ring and vault rotations at Blake Arena to come from behind and turn an early 2.25-point deficit in a 4.9-point lead after four events. Navy pulled away down the stretch with strong parallel bar and high bar event scores to win by its eventual 10.6-point margin.

Individually, the Mids won five events. Jonny Tang (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) led the squad with wins on the floor exercise (14.75) and high bar (14.2) on his way to the all-around victory (83.8). Eric Poletti (Sr., Lancaster, Pa.) finished in first place on the rings with a 15.05, while Andy Jones (So., Reading, Mass.) took first on the vault at 14.8. Mitchell Larios (Sr., Frisco, Texas) was the fourth Navy gymnast with a first-place result as he was the top athlete on the parallel bars with a 14.4 score.

"Today was the direct result of our best week of training," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "This was exactly the bounce back performance that we needed as we prepare for the postseason.

"Poletti was a beast on the rings today. Tang unveiled a new floor routine to near perfection, while Jones and Larios again led the way on the vault. We are all healthy and hitting on all cylinders heading into the championship season."

As a team, the Mids recorded a score of 67.45 in the floor exercise, 67.0 on the pommel horse, 71.2 on the rings, 71.8 on the vault, 69.1 on the parallel bars and a 68.2 on the high bar.

Sunday's meet began with competitive and tight rotations of floor and pommel horse action. The host Pride team came out on top of the Mids by 0.85 point on the floor and 1.4 on the pommel horse. Tang and Larios led Navy's charge on the floor with the top-two scores of 14.75 and 14.5. Noah Beeman (So., Dayton, Ohio) gave the Mids their third top-five result with a 14.2 score. During the pommel horse rotation, Eric Morrison (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.) and Connor Westrick (Sr., Waterford, Wis.) finished in second and third place, respectively with scores of 14.35 and 13.8 to lead Navy.

A sweep of the top-four spots on the rings helped the Mids take their first lead of the day. Poletti's 15.05 score was first, while Connor Gonzales (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was runner-up with a 14.7 result. Wyatt LaPointe (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Christian Correale (Fr., Harrisburg, Pa.) tied for third place with identical 14.25-point scores.

Navy carried over its momentum during the vault rotation with another top-four sweep. Jones was the top-finishing performer at 14.8 to finish 0.35 points ahead of Larios (14.45). David Frick (Sr., St. Johns, Fla.) ranked third overall with a 14.3, while Tang was fourth with a result of 14.2. Zac Ceroli (Sr., Angier, N.C.) rounded out the Mids' vaulting lineup with the number six overall score of 14.05.

During the parallel bars competition, Navy finished with three of the top-five results courtesy of strong performances by Larios, Westrick and Tang. Larios was number one overall with a 14.4 to finish one spot ahead of Westrick and his 14.35. Tang finished fourth overall with a 13.7 score.

Up 7.7 points at 346.55 to 338.85, the Mids closed out the road victory with a 2.9-point win on the high bar. Tang and Poletti went one and two with scores of 14.2 and 14.0, respectively. The duo of Jones and Beeman tied for fourth place with 13.8-point results.

On the strength of his top-four scores on the floor, high bar, vault and parallel bars, as well as a 13.65 on the rings and a 13.3 on the pommel horse, Tang finished the all-around competition with the top score of 83.8. Springfield's Jon Zirna finished as the runner-up at 82.95.

Navy will continue its prep for postseason action with two weeks of practice before heading back to Springfield College for the 2016 USAG Collegiate Championships on the weekend of March 25-26.
