March 14, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team began its spring break trip with three different regattas this past weekend.
The big team race event of the weekend was at St. Mary's College and featured many of the top teams in the country. Light winds lead to a lot of waiting around and it was looking questionable as to weather or not the event was going to be completed in time. Fortunately, the wind filled in on Sunday afternoon and the initial round robin finished just in time. Navy's team of Michael Popp, Patrick Snow, Gary Prieto, Michael Madigan, Megan Hough, Aaron Hull and Michelle Katz sailed to a 7-2 record, good enough for second overall out of 10 teams.
At home, the conditions were very similar, with a lot of waiting. In fact, the regatta never got a single race in on Saturday during the Navy Spring Women's Regatta. The Naval Academy Sailing Squadron Social Committee did send the visiting teams away satisfied on the first day, however, with a top notch complimentary cookout. The waiting continued on Sunday morning and the teams finally got on the water at around 12:30, quickly sailing five races per division before the 3 PM cutoff time. Navy's women started strong, but caught some bad breaks in the second set, dropping to 14th overall out of 19 teams. Hannah Hughes and Mary Morocco came in 12th in A division while Molly Robertson and Molly Hanson were 16th in B. Addison Hackstaff did a terrific job helping out with the Race Committee.
Another Navy team traveled south to compete in the Charleston Spring Coed Regatta. They had the best conditions of the weekend, completing all 14 races per division by noon on Sunday. Navy wound up fifth overall out of 14 teams, with Peter Hogan and Will Hawley finishing fifth in a division while Jimmy Madigan and Tyler Fleig were fourth in B.
The rest of the team will be joining them in Charleston for four days of training, before the team returns next weekend to compete in the St. Mary's Women's Regatta and host the Graham Hall Team Race.
