Gymnastics has Standout Day in USAG Event Finals

March 26, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Navy gymnastics program had a stellar day of competition during the individual finals of the USAG Collegiate Championships on Saturday at Springfield College's Blake Arena. The Mids had six gymnasts qualified for action on Saturday in at least one event and all six competitors came away with USAG Collegiate All-American honors. Led by the trio of Mitchell Larios (Sr., Frisco, Texas), Eric Poletti (Sr., Lancaster, Pa.) and Jonny Tang (Jr., Malvern, Pa.), who all won individual events,, Navy's finalists turned in nine combined All-American performances.

"All finalists rose to the occasion this afternoon with the all the best competitors in the gym battling it out," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "Poletti, Larios and Tang moved the Navy program forward today as USAG National Champions!"

The vault was Navy's most successful event on Saturday as Midshipmen gymnasts finished in first and third with Larios leading the way with a 15.175 score, his second-highest mark of the 2016 season. He was followed closely behind by Andy Jones (So., Reading, Mass.) who turned in a 14.625 result.

Prior to Larios' win, the afternoon began with Tang earned the second USAG Collegiate Championship event win of his career as the 2015 champion for the all-around eked out the win on the floor exercise by just 0.025 points over Arizona State's Zack Mollett, 14.55 to 14.525.

On the rings, Poletti gave Navy its third USAG Collegiate Champion as he outpointed Air Force's Fletcher Braunton by 0.225 points with a 14.85 final score. Tang just missed making the top six and finishing on the podium as his ring routine was scored a 13.225, 0.05 points shy of William & Mary's Peter Makey.

The Mids earned two USAG All-American accolades on both the pommel horse and the high bar. On the pommel horse, the senior duo of Connor Westrick (Waterford, Wisc.) and Michael Dorsey (Hollywood, Fla.) finished back-to-back with Westrick earning a fifth-place finish with his 13.825 score and Dorsey a sixth-place result at 13.625. On the high bar, Tang and Poletti doubled up on their USAG honors with respective finishes of third and sixth. Tang turned in the third-highest score on the afternoon with a 14.2, while Poletti was sixth at 13.875.

Tang was Navy's only three-time podium finisher on Saturday as he also was bestowed an All-American moniker for his 14.15 score on the parallel bars. Tang was nearly joined on the podium by Westrick, who just missed sixth place by 0.05 points with a score of 13.875. In total during the two-day event, Tang collected four USAG Collegiate All-American medals as he finished fourth in the all-around on Friday night.

Navy will next turn its attention to the ECAC Championships at William & Mary next weekend. The league title and an automatic bid will be on the line beginning on Saturday afternoon for the five schools in the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League. The team competition kicks off on Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at William & Mary's Kaplan Arena.
