ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (11-5, 0-1 PL) edged Delaware (5-2), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex. Freshman
Josie Rogers clinched the team win with her victory at No. 5 singles.
"I am very proud of the ladies and how they came together for the victory," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We always seem to have tough matches against Delaware and this was another knock-down, drag-out match. We dug ourselves a hole by losing the doubles point but showed great fight and perseverance to win four of the six singles to get the victory."
Delaware won two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point and also won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Navy grabbed three singles victories as the overall match was even at 3-3 with Rogers and Sarah Hall as the last players on the court at No. 5 singles.
Rogers won the first set 7-5 and then bested Hall in a tiebreak in the second set, 7-6 (7-5), to get the win at No. 5 singles and clinch the 4-3 win over Delaware.
"All the chips of the match were riding on Josie's racket," said Puryear. "She played some really solid ball and was able to break down her opponent and get the win."
Rogers has a team-high 18 singles wins this season (18-4) and she won her 10th straight singles match.
Senior Katie Porter defeated Annie Jaskulski at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Navy's other two singles wins came in straight sets as freshman Carlee Conway beat Sara Komer at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and junior Audrey Channell bested Arielle Shuren at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Conway is 15-3 in singles play and won her 13th straight singles match, which ties 2015 graduate Noelle Kaufmann's program record for most consecutive wins.
Navy's lone doubles victory came at the No. 3 position where Conway teamed with junior Summer Ralston to defeat Hall and Jaskulski, 6-3.
Navy improves to 5-1 all-time against Delaware and wins its second straight match by the score of 4-3. Navy has won four straight matches.
The previously scheduled Navy vs. Morgan State match on Sunday has been cancelled.
