Trio of Midshipmen Compete as Individuals in NCAA Championship Finals

April 16, 2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio - One day after competing in its first NCAA Championship meet as a team since 2009, the Navy gymnastics program was represented with three individuals in the event finals at Ohio State University's St. John Arena on Saturday night. Competing alongside gymnasts involved in the six-team championship finals, Jonny Tang (Jr., Malvern, Pa.), Eric Poletti (Sr., Lancaster, Pa.) and Connor Gonzales (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) all showcased their talents in individual action.

Competing in the all-around, Tang was the first Midshipmen to get on the floor on Saturday night. The parallel bars were first up for the junior, who was the lone representative in the all-around competition from a non-Big Ten or Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (Big 12/Pac 12) school. Tang registered a 13.65 score.

During the second rotation, Gonzales joined the fray as he took to the rings. The senior, who overcame an equipment malfunction on Friday to recover and post the third-best score from a gymnast on a non-advancing team, completed his championship weekend with a 13.95 score on the rings. Tang's second rotation apparatus was the high bar where he recorded a 13.45 mark.

Poletti was the final Mid to compete in the individual finals as he got his time on the rings during the third rotation. The highest-scoring Navy gymnast on the rings this season, Poletti turned in a score of 14.3 to finish in a tie for 27th overall in the NCAA. The floor exercise was the third event for Tang and he earned a 14.4 score to rank 24th-best. Both his score and final standing were personal-bests for the day on any one individual event.

Tang's final three rotations on the pommel horse, rings and vault closed out the evening of action for Navy. The junior's 14.1 score on the rings led the way, while he posted 14.05 and 13.3 results on the vault and pommel horse, respectively.

For the event, Tang recorded a cumulative score of 82.95 in the all-around to place 15th overall in the nation.

"Jonny hit another six routines tonight to cap off a perfect weekend," said head coach Kip Simons. "Eric and Connor both did great ring routines on the biggest stage in gymnastics. We leave Columbus after hitting 40 of 41 routines. This was a weekend for everyone associated with the Navy gymnastics program to be very proud of."

Oklahoma University secured the NCAA team title on Saturday night with a score of 443.40. The Sooners held off a six-team field that included Stanford (434.05), Ohio State (433.05), Illinois (432.75), Penn State (425.40) and Minnesota (424.40).
