April 25, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team has qualified for the ICSA Women's National Championship by placing sixth out of 16 teams at this weekend's MAISA Women's National Championship.
Hobart and William Smith Colleges hosted the MAISA Women's Championship this past weekend, where 16 teams vied for the nine berths at the College Sailing Women's Nationals in San Diego from May 24-27. Despite cold air and water, the conditions were great for sailing on Saturday, with sunny skies and wind from the north at 8-12 knots.
Navy got off to a hot start and fought for the lead throughout most of the first day. Despite some bad breaks towards the end of the regatta, the team's strong start left them with a sixth place overall finish, comfortably qualifying for the Nationals.
Hannah Hughes and Brittany Webb-Martin finished sixth in A division while Molly Robertson and Molly Hanson were fourth in B. After the event, Hannah Hughes was named to the All-MAISA Women's Skipper Second Team for her performance over the year.
The major coed regatta of the weekend was the Admirals Cup, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. This event featured a very tough 20-team field and challenging conditions, with variable winds and strong currents.
Navy proved up to the challenge though and posted yet another strong result, winding up fourth overall. Patrick Snow and Mary Morocco finished third in A division, while Peter Hogan and Ana Mier were ninth in B and Addison Hackstaff came in second in C.
The Arrigan Regatta was hosted by Georgetown University, with eight teams attending this year's event. Navy's team of Manuel Inserni-Pagan, Spencer Nora, Hamrick Morgan and Tyler Fleig finished sixth overall.
