ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior attacker Morgan Young's (Baltimore, Md.) team-high four-goal performance helped lead the Navy women's lacrosse team (8-5, 3-2 Patriot League) past Colgate (3-8, 2-3 PL), 15-10, on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"We were a very resilient group by playing the full 60 minutes, especially taking the opportunities we need to take in the second half to secure a crucial league win," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said.
Navy and Colgate battled with two lead changes and three ties through the first 10:53 of the contest. The Raiders ended up on top with a 4-3 lead as Taylor Fischer rocketed a hard shot from five meters out to beat Navy goalkeeper Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) with 19:07 left in the first half.
Navy however took control of the remainder of the first half, going on a 6-2 run to build a three-goal lead, 9-6, in a span of 16:52. Young and sophomore Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) combined for a perfect four-of-four on free position opportunities for the Mids to help string the run. Young's four-goal performance was the third time this season she accomplished the feat.
Colgate responded in the second half, scoring back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to one, 9-8, with 26:42 remaining in the game. The Raiders' Emily Peebles tallied two of her team-high four goals during the stretch.
As the Raiders were looking for the equalizer off a free-position with 25:11 left, Boyum picked up her fifth save of the game to help spark Navy's offense on the other end. Off the Boyum save, Navy strung together three-straight goals to extend its lead to four, 12-8, with 20:48 on the clock. Senior Katie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) tallied two goals during the run, both of which were almost identical wrap around plays from behind the net.
"I am proud of the way our defense stepped up in the second half with some key stops," said Timchal. "It seems that Ingrid [Boyum] really finds a groove as the game progresses, especially in the second half."
Colgate came back off a Navy turnover as Tara Atkinson found teammate Charlotte Redican, who finished the play for her lone tally of the contest to bring the Raiders within three, 12-9, with 18:39 left.
The Mids capped off the final 15:59 with three of the final four goals to capture their third-straight league victory with a 15-10 win. Freshmen Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Meg O'Donnell (Forest Hill, Md.) each tallied a goal during the run.
Along with Young's four goals, Gallagher recorded a team-high five-point (3g, 2a) performance. Jenna Collins and O'Donnell each finished with a natural hat trick, while O'Sullivan tallied three points (2g, 1a) and freshman Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) chipped in with two assists.
Boyum finished with her second-straight double digit save performance with 10 on 19 chances. The sophomore netminder improved to 8-5 on the season.
Navy held advantages over Colgate in clears, 13-of-17 to 6-of-7, free-position shots, 5-of-5 to 3-of-8 and saves, 10-1. Colgate led in shots, 30-22 and draw controls, 17-10, while both teams finished with 13 ground balls.
Navy welcomes Boston University, who also is 3-2 in league play, on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
