May 12, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" Six Midshipmen were recognized Thursday for their academic and athletic achievements by receiving Academic All-District II First-Team honors for at-large sports from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Navy's honorees â€"â€" Ryan Bailey (Jr., Boardman, Ohio, swimming); Ellen Bradford (Sr., Knoxville, Tenn., swimming); Rebecca Greenberg (Sr., Horseheads, N.Y., rowing); Kathleen Heinbach (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio, rowing); Connor Westrick (Sr., Waterford, Wis., gymnastics); Michael Woulfe (Sr., Oak Park, Ill., wrestling) â€"â€" now will be placed onto the national ballot to determine the Academic All-America team for at-large sports.
Bailey, Bradford, Greenberg, Heinbach and Woulfe all received academic all-district laurels in 2015. Bradford would go on to earn Academic All-America honors for the second year in a row last season. She garnered first-team laurels last year after being named to the third team in 2014.
Navy's six recipients matches Minnesota's total for the most all-district accolades for at-large sports earned by a school in the country. The two institutions and Georgia tallied a nation's best six all-district nods in 2015. Additionally, Navy was the lone school to have totaled at least three awards for both men's and women's at-large sports for the second year in a row.
The only other Patriot League school to have an all-district recipient for at-large sports was American (one award).
To be eligible for the initial district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 through the end of the 2015 fall semester, be at a minimum a sophomore academically, as well as be a starter or key reserve on their respective team. The at-large sports program consists of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling. CoSIDA's District II consists of Division I schools located in Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Each school is allowed to nominate up to four student-athletes for their respective men's and women's district ballots.
Ryan Bailey
An operations research major, Bailey has posted a 3.97 grade-point average â€"â€" he has had a 4.00 GPA in four of his five completed semesters â€"â€" and is ranked second in his class on the USNA's Military Order of Merit. He has received academic honors from the USNA in each of his five completed terms and was named to the 2016 Patriot League All-Academic Team for men's swimming.
Bailey earned Second-Team All-Patriot League accolades this year for the second season in a row as he helped Navy win the program's 13th consecutive Patriot League title. He placed second in the 100 butterfly at the league meet for the second straight season while also winning the consolation final in the 200 fly and 100 breaststroke events.
Ellen Bradford
The two-time Academic All-American has posted a 4.00 grade-point average at Navy as an honors systems engineering major. Bradford is one of only three Mids to have been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a sport three times in a career during the school's quarter century membership in the league. She currently stands first in Navy's Class of 2016 on the USNA Academic Order of Merit and is a nominee for an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship that would assist with the graduate degree in engineering she will begin pursuing this summer. After the completion of her graduate studies, the soon-to-be Ensign in the Navy will begin her service assignment as a nuclear submarine officer.
Athletically, Bradford has received First-Team All-Patriot League honors in each of her four seasons to help the Mids to league crowns all four years and run its overall title streak to five. She qualified for the championship final in each of her 12 individual events at the Patriot League Championship in her career, winning the 200 breaststroke as both a sophomore and junior, placing second in an event five times and recording nine top-four showings over the course of her career.
Rebecca Greenberg
A seven-time member of the Commandant's List at the Naval Academy, Greenberg has posted a 4.00 grade-point average in each of her seven semesters. An honors systems engineering major, she garnered CoSIDA All-District II At-Large First Team accolades in 2015. Greenberg is a three-time recipient of Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades. After the 2014 and 2015 seasons, she was recognized as a CRCA National Scholar Athlete. Following her graduation, Greenberg will be commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in the nuclear submarine community.
On the water, Greenberg has seen time in both eight- and four-person crews during her four years on the women's crew team. After rowing as a member of the gold medal winning second varsity four crew at the EAWRC Sprints in 2014, she moved up into a spot on the second varsity eight crew and won the 2015 Patriot League Championship. This spring, Greenberg has been racing as a member of the varsity four ranks.
Kathleen Heinbach
Posting a 4.00 grade-point average through each of her first seven semesters at the Naval Academy, Heinbach has been named to the Commandant's List seven straight times. Majoring in computer engineering, Heinbach was selected as a CoSIDA All-District II At-Large First Team member in 2015, as well as the Patriot League Women's Rowing Student-Athlete of the Year last year. She's twice been named as a CRCA National Scholar Athlete is a three time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Heinbach will be joining the nuclear submarine division of the United States Navy as an Ensign after her graduation later this month.
A consistent member of the second varsity eight crew over the past three seasons, Heinbach has won Patriot League titles in both 2014 and 2015. This spring, she's once again in the second varsity eight boat that will look defend its league title this Friday, May 13.
Connor Westrick
A leading member of the pommel horse and parallel bar starting units for Navy's gymnastics team, Westrick capped his four-year career earlier this spring with strong postseason outings at the USAG Collegiate, ECAC and NCAA Championship events. At the USAGs, he medaled courtesy of a fifth-place finish on the pommel horse. Westrick finds himself second all-time in the program record book with a 15.0 routine score on the pommel horse at the 2014 Star Meet versus Army West Point.
In the classroom, the honors systems engineering major is a six-time member of the Commandant's List at Navy. Westrick has been selected by the Collegiate Gymnastics Association as a First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete following each of his first three seasons and is in line for a fourth bid later on this spring. Last year, he was one of just four national gymnasts that were honored by the CGA for having posted a 4.00 GPA during the 2015 spring semester. Westrick will be commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy following his graduation with a service selection of nuclear submarines.
Michael Woulfe
Woulfe has been a success story both on and off the mat for the Navy wrestling program. Although he was on the team his first two years, it wasn't until his junior year that he saw action in a varsity or junior varsity competition. He produced a 20-14 record at 184 pounds as a junior and followed up with a 30-14 mark this past season, pushing up to 197 pounds to make way for the return of 2016 All-American Mathew Miller. Additionally, he put together an 8-1 dual record this season, dropping his lone match to 15th-ranked John Bolich of Lehigh. Woulfe placed seventh at the EIWA Championship and received an at-large berth to compete at the NCAA Championship. He was one of three wrestlers on the team to reach the 30-win milestone this spring and one of 47 different wrestlers in program history.
An exceptional student, Woulfe owns a 3.92 GPA in physics, earning a 4.00 GPA in each of the last five semesters. Nominated for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, he was one of nine Trident Scholars at the Naval Academy this year. He is ranked ninth in his class of 1,095 students in Overall Order of Merit which factors in both his Academic Order of Merit (#63) and Military Order of Merit (#5). A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District II First-Team selection and 2016 NWCA All-Academic Team member, he has been named to the Commandant's List every semester, the Superintendent's List six times and the Dean's List once. He will graduate in May and be commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy where his service assignment is special warfare.
