LEWISBURG, Pa. - Navy women's track and field sophomore Charlene Kearns first-place performance in the pole vault helped lead Navy to its third place after Day One of the Patriot League Championship on Friday in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
"Our pole vaulters picked up some key points, especially with Charlene [Kearns] grabbing a well-deserved first place," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "Hopefully the rest of our squad can piggy back off their performances into Saturday."
Kearns was crowned champion in the pole vault with a career-best 12ft-5.5in (3.80m) mark. Teammate Marissa Stewart followed up on Kearns' performance with a third-place showing of 12ft-1.5in (3.70m), which was also a personal-best.
In the hammer throw, Navy sophomore Ashanti Curry (Jacksonville, N.C.) and freshman Izzy Marini (Elkgrove, Calif.) picked up combined for six points with fifth and seventh place finishes. Curry placed fifth with a throw of 160ft-2in (48.83m), while Marini finished seventh at 150ft-5in (45.84m).
Navy senior distance runner Morgan O'Connor (Sammamish, Wash.) placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 36:54.51.
Navy's 4x800-meter relay squad that featured Katie Jan, Meghan Harvey, Ali Valenti and Amanda Agana placed fifth with an ECAC-qualifying time of 9:11.26.
In the preliminary races, sophomore Aaliyah Gordon qualified for Saturday's 100-meter dash final with a time of 12.82.
Navy currently sits third with 30.50 points. Bucknell leads the field with 85.5 points. Lehigh is second with 49.50 points. Holy Cross (22), Army West Point (20), Boston University (13), American (6), Lafayette (4.50), Loyola (2) and Colgate (1) round out the field.
Saturday's action picks back up at 11:15 a.m. in the field with the shot put and then the track events start at 12 noon with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
