June 4, 2016 SAN DIEGO - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team placed seventh out of 36 teams at the Gill Coed National Sailing Championship in San Diego this weekend. Navy placed in the top-10 of two spring national championships after placing 10th in the ICSA Team Race Nationals last week.
"While our sights were set slightly higher, the team should be very proud of this finish and of all of our accomplishments over the year," said head coach Ian Burman. "We definitely got better throughout the year and we were sailing our best at the end."
Navy faced stiff competition with the first round seeing the fleet split into two 18-team semifinal regattas to determine the top 18 teams for the final championship round. Navy moved on easily, finishing third in the Eastern Semifinal and felt good heading into the national finals.
After a long period of hazy grey conditions for most of the week, the sun finally came through for the finals and there were two great days of sailing. The wind was light to moderate throughout the event and the fleet was the most competitive group Navy had seen all year.
With the tight fleet and variable conditions, consistency proved almost impossible as every team scored finishes at the top and the bottom of the fleet and Navy wound up seventh overall in the championship round.
Patrick Snow, Megan Hough and Molly Robertson came in seventh in A Division while Gary Prieto, Michael Popp, Michelle Katz and Molly Hanson were 12th in B. The light conditions prevented Aaron Hull, Michael Madigan and Peter Hogan from seeing any action, but they did an excellent job getting the boats ready and making sure everything on shore was taken care of.
Georgetown won the Coed National Championship and was followed in the top three by Coast Guard and Yale.
Navy's intercollegiate sailing season has concluded.
