CHARLESTON, S.C. - Navy sophomore forward Daniel Kwon scored on penalty kick and junior goalkeeper Mac Burke made 10 saves as the Mids (0-1-1) tied Furman (1-0-1), 1-1, in a double-overtime men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at the College of Charleston's Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point.
"The guys battled hard today," said head coach Tim O'Donohue. "We were able to come back after giving up the first-half goal and we played well in the second half. Although Furman outshot us, we did well to control possession. We had great performances from a lot of guys today and we have to build on this."
After Furman committed a foul in the penalty box, Kwon scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute to even the game at 1-1. It was Kwon's third goal of his young career.
Furman got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute when Josiah Baker connected on a low shot to the right side of the net. Baker also scored in Furman's 1-0 win over No. 23 FIU on Friday.
Navy was able to hold off a barrage of Furman shots in the second half. The Paladins registered 15 shots in the period with Burke making eight saves. Furman outshot Navy, 6-2, in the two 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team was able to score the game-winner.
Furman held a 25-7 edge in overall shots and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Furman also led in corner kicks, 11-6. Baker recorded a game-high five shots for Furman.
Burke made a career-high 10 saves for the Midshipmen. The 10 saves are the most by a Navy goalkeeper in five years. Aaron Dupere made 11 saves against UMBC on Sept. 10, 2011. Burke's previous career-high was three saves.
Furman was an NCAA Tournament team in 2015. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Navy will next host Northern Illinois (0-0-1) in its home opener at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 PM.
