Men's Tennis Team Completes First Fall Tourneys

Sept. 19, 2016

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team began its 2016 fall campaign this weekend when it participated in a pair of tournaments, the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and the Penn Invitational. Navy faced Ball State, Marquette and Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and Brown, Cornell, Columbia and Yale in Philadelphia.

"The team got to compete against some great talent this weekend in both of our tournaments," said head coach Chris Garner. "Facing tough competition as our team did will help them as the fall season progresses.

"I believe all of the guys played some good tennis. As we practice and play more tournaments this fall they will find their footing again in these competitive matches."

Leading the Mids in victories on the weekend was Ian Landwehr (Fr., Daleville, Ind.), who earned a pair of singles wins over players from Ball State and teamed with Cameron Kirkpatrick (So., Menlo Park, Calif.) for a doubles victory over a BSU tandem. Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) also notched a three-set singles win over Patrick Downs from Ball State and, alongside Krishna Jana (Sr., Seabrook, Texas), posted a doubles win over Downs and his teammate Connor Andersen. Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) both won â€"â€" over Cornell's Rohan Sikka â€"â€" and lost â€"â€" to Yale's Dennis Wang â€"â€" three-set singles matches, while Durham, Jana, Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) â€"â€" twice â€"â€" Gabriel Pilones (Fr., Bradenton, Fla.) and Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) each lost singles contests that were extended into three sets.

Off the court, Navy team captain Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

"Being a part of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic was an incredible highlight for all of the guys," said Garner. "The appreciation the tournament showed for all of the participants was amazing, and the goodwill they bestowed toward the USNA players will definitely be a lifelong memory for our team."

Navy's fall slate continues this weekend when it will play host to the Joe Hunt Invitational in Annapolis. Players from 11 teams will take to the Navy courts in six singles flights and three doubles draws Friday through Sunday.

"The team has a quick turn around as they prepare for the Joe Hunt Invite this Friday," said Garner. "I know they will be motivated to work on some areas they can improve upon going into the weekend."
