CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy men's soccer freshman Diego Manrique has been named the Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 4. Manrique helped Navy post a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois in its only game last week.

The Buford, Georgia native played the full 90 minutes on the defensive backline and aided goalkeeper Mac Burke in Navy's first shutout of the season. Manrique helped limit Northern Illinois to just two shots on goal.

Manrique also set up Aubrey Jones' goal in the 47th minute to put the Mids ahead, 2-0. Manrique served a ball from the left side of the box to Alex Evans, who headed the ball to Jones. Jones one-timed a shot through the NIU defense to give Navy an insurance goal and Manrique earned his first career assist.

Manrique has started all three of Navy's games so far in his freshman season and he has played every minute of every match (290 minutes).

In his senior season at Mill Creek High School, Manrique earned Top Drawer Soccer Spring All-America Second-Team honors.

Navy (1-1-1) has been voted fifth in this week's NSCAA Northeast Region Poll. Other Patriot League schools in the regional poll include American (1), Colgate (3) and Boston University (10). American is ranked 20th in the NSCAA National Top 25 Poll.

Navy will play a pair of non-conference road games this week. The Mids will play at Villanova on Thursday and at George Washington on Sunday.
