NEW YORK, N.Y. - Junior Brittany Burg and freshman Grace West, both with ECAC-qualifying performances, led the Navy women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the Towson Tiger Invitational on Saturday at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York, New York.
"We saw some good performances against good competition," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "We continue to progress in the right direction and are pleased to see our level of competition this early in the season."
Burg ran a strong 500-meter run, placing first with a personal-best time of 1:15.50. The junior runner crossed the tape 1.07 seconds faster than second-place finisher Brittany Meads (Morgan State).
Alongside Burg, West also tallied an ECAC-qualifying performance in the mile with a second-place time of 4:58.92. Cross Country teammate Katie Jan finished in the top five with a fifth-place finish of 5:11.96.
Freshman distance runner Kara Kakascik clocked in a third-place time of 2:18.07 in the 800-meter run.
Navy's cross country trio of Erin Sieffert, Ali Valenti and Rachel Fairbanks finished in the top five in the 1,000-meter run. Seiffert led the pack with a third-place time of 2:59.46, while Valenti and Fairbanks finished right behind at 3:01.01 and 3:01.44.
In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Erin McDonnell and senior Allison Parks placed in the top three. McDonnell crossed the tape in second at 10:06.07 with Parks finishing in third at 10:20.96.
Senior Hali McFadgen recorded two top-five finishes in the 60-meter hurdles. McFadgen finished fourth in the preliminary race at 9.03 and then followed up with a fifth-place time of 9.10 in the finals.
For the field events, freshman Julia Speranzo led the Mids with a third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 5ft-4.25in (1.63.).
Sophomore Rosemary Brinegar and freshman Kaitlyn Stafford recorded top-five marks in the pole vault. Both Brinegar and Stafford hit the 11ft-7.75in (3.55m) mark, but Brinegar crossed the pole on her first attempt to grab fourth place, while Stafford hit it on her second to garner fifth.
Junior Ashanti Curry tallied Navy's 15th top-five performance in the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 43ft-1.75in (13.15m).
Navy finished second out of 15 scoring teams with 85.50 team points.
Delaware finished a top of the group with 106 points. Navy (85.5), Towson (80.5), Morgan State (58) and Manhattan (56) rounded out the top five.
Navy will continue its 2017 campaign on Saturday with the Terrapin Invitational.
