ANNAPOLIS, Md. ---- The Navy swimming and diving teams closed the home portion of their respective regular seasons by sweeping Johns Hopkins and Towson Wednesday evening at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis. The Navy women (9-2) recorded a 222-65 victory over Johns Hopkins (5-7) and a 168-131 win over Towson (6-3). In the men's meet, the Mids (9-2) defeated the Blue Jays (8-4) by the score of 193-96 and the Tigers (3-4) by the count of 162-133.
"We are very pleased with the overall performance of the team," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "To come out, mid-week after three long days of classes, and swim the way they did, I was real proud of them."
"I was really happy with the efforts today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "At this point in the year, everybody has been working really hard. Sometimes it is hard to get up there and just continue to drop time. The efforts were good and some guys were still able to drop time from last week or this time last season."
Navy's women's team placed first in seven of the 16 events contested during the meet, with six different Mids winning an event. The lone swimmer to earn a pair of victories was Lauren Barber (So., New Wilmington, Pa.), who won the 200 freestyle (1:50.02) by over three seconds and the 500 free (4:54.48) by over six seconds.
Elyse MacIsaac (Fr., Stafford, Va.) earned the victory in the 100 breast with her time of 1:04.80. Delaney Walz (Fr., Mays Landing, N.J.) followed by winning the 200 fly by nearly seven seconds with a clocking of 2:01.78. Kenzie Margroum (Sr., Fort Thomas, Ky.) then closed out the first half of the meet by touching the wall first in the 50 free with her effort of 25.05.
Olivia Morrell (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) began the second half of the dual by winning the 100 free with a clocking of 51.67, then Kaitlyn O'Reilly (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) made it five wins in a row for the Mids when her time of 2:02.19 allowed her to finish first in the 200 backstroke.
"We had a couple of lineup changes today," said Morrison. "We took a couple of people out of their main events and had some people step-up. Elyse MacIssac in the breaststroke, Casey Lawson (So., Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) in the 100 free (third place behind Morrell and Margroum) was a little change for her. We did some different things and were proud of the way they responded. We're in a good position for the next few weeks as we get ready for the conference championships."
The Navy men opened the proceedings by winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of James Wilson (Fr., Ephrata, Pa.), Marlin Brutkewicz (Sr., Mobile, Ala.), Ryan Bailey (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio) and Michael Bundas (Sr., Saline, Mich.) combined for a time of 1:30.56 to win by the event by over two seconds.
Earning the first individual event win of the dual for the Mids was Ethan King (Sr., Collierville, Tenn.), who won the 100 backstroke by one second with his time of 50.00. The lone additional swimming event won by the Mids in the first half of the meet was in the 50 free when Zach Piedt (So., Fort Mill, S.C.) touched the wall first in the 50 free with his effort of 21.04.
Vince Everman (So., Philadelphia, Pa.) made it a sweep of the sprint events for Navy when he won the 100 free in a time of 45.85. His victory would be the last individual event win of the night for the Mids, but teammate Bradley Buchter (Fr., Hickory, N.C.) won both diving boards. He posted a score of 393.23 to win the one meter by 50 points and accrued a score of 387.60 points to win the three meter by 25 points.
The Mids closed the night by winning the 200 freestyle relay. Phil Speri (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.), Chris Mayer (Fr., Lakeway, Texas), King and Bundas combined for a time of 1:24.88 to win race by one-half of a second.
"We have shown good depth," said Roberts. "Guys are getting better and better each time we race. They are going to make it a really hard job for us coaches to select our roster for the conference meet."
The Navy men's team will conclude its regular season Friday at Columbia, while the Navy women's squad will close its slate by competing Saturday in the Bucknell Invite. Both programs will vie for the Patriot League Championship Feb. 15-18 at Bucknell.
