Navy Wrestling Remains Unbeaten, Defeats Maryland, 23-16

Jan. 8, 2017

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Navy wrestling team won five of the final six matches to come from behind and defeat Maryland, 23-16, Sunday afternoon at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md. The Midshipmen, who have won five in a row against Maryland, are now 6-0 in dual action this season, while the Terps fell to 2-7.

"I am extremely proud of the team effort today as we retool our mindset for seven days of work for seven minutes of opportunity," said third-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "The staff has helped guide a young team through some tough times over the last six weeks and today was a positive outcome in helping our wrestlers to believe in what we are doing. The team has transitioned from a group of talented individuals to a team that holds each other accountable to the Navy Standard."

Navy fell behind early in the match, as Maryland won the 125 and 133-pound matches to take a 7-0 lead.

Jared Prince (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was able to trim the Navy to just two, however, after putting together one of the dominating performances of his young career. The 141-pound rookie recorded three takedowns and three four-point near falls, as well as over three minutes of riding time, en route to a 20-1 technical fall (4:40) over redshirt junior Jhared Simmons. Prince is now 3-0 in dual competition this season.

Maryland, meanwhile, pushed its lead to five (10-5) after 16th-ranked Alfred Bannister got by the Mids' Corey Wilding (Jr / Pittsburgh, Pa.) at 149 pounds, 7-3. Bannister held a 3-2 lead when he made his move and scored a pair of takedowns in the final 54 seconds to seal the victory. While Wilding is now 13-8 on the year, five of his eight losses have been to nationally-ranked foes.

"Corey set a strong pace and has continued to improve every week of the season," said Sharratt. "The score of his match was not indicative of how close it really was. He has to be stingy giving up points, but his heart and effort is beyond reproach."

A win by Zack Elvin (Fr / Harrisburg, Pa.) at 157 pounds would spark a five-match winning streak by the Mids and not only give them the lead for the first time, but secure the program's 54th victory in the series. Elvin led whistle to whistle in his match against Danny Boychuck and limited the redshirt freshman to just four escapes en route to a 10-4 victory.

"Our youth in Prince and Elvin shows we have a bright future," added Sharratt. "Both wrestled like hammers today with a short week of recovery and a hard week of training. They have responded very well to the challenge of college wrestling and we are so excited to watch them develop every week."

The Mids took their first lead in the match (11-10) following a 2-1 victory by 165-pound Drew Daniels (Jr / Overland Park, Kan.) over Terps redshirt freshman Josh Ugalde. Both wrestlers earned the token escape to start the second and third periods, but it would be a penalty point awarded to Daniels in the opening period that would prove to be the deciding factor. Ugalde caught Daniels in the eye early in the match and when he sent his second swipe to the face, the officials gave Daniels what would be the match-winning point.

Back-to-back extra-point victories by Navy at 174 and 184 pounds would provide the Mids with a 10-point advantage at 20-10. Two-time NCAA qualifier Jadaen Bernstein (Jr / Glen Gardner, N.J.) was phenomenal in his match against 174-pound Idris White. Ranked 18th nationally, Bernstein recorded nine takedowns and built up just short of four minutes of riding time en route to a 23-8 technical fall over White. While Bernstein improved to 17-6 overall and 4-0 in dual action, it was also his 75th career victory.

"Jadaen's match exemplifies what we are working on every day and the consistency of his commitment is paying off," added Sharratt.

Team captain Ryan Harman (Sr / West Linn, Ore.)was sound from start to finish in his victory over 184-pound redshirt freshman Sam Rowell. Harman, who captured just his fourth career dual victory, surrendered just one escape in his 9-1 major decision.

"Harman also wrestled very well this afternoon, setting a high pace and scoring points in his positions," said Sharratt.

Sealing the dual win for the Mids was 197-pound Steban Cervantes (Jr / Chula Vista, Calif.), who scored a 7-3 victory over redshirt freshman David-Brian Whisler. Cervantes outscored Whisler 5-1 in the final period to improve to 4-0 in dual action this season. It was a strong win by Cervantes whose foe came into the bout with a 12-4 overall mark and a 6-2 dual record.

"Steban also had a strong performance in what was a pivotal match against a tough competitor," said Sharratt. "He is really steeping up and performing well."
Maryland heavyweight Youssif Hemida went on to pinn the Mids' Ethan Stanley (Sr / Saugerties, N.Y.) in the final match, but it would be too little, too late for the Terps in a 23-16 loss.

The Midshipmen return to action on Friday when they play host to Lehigh in a 7:30 pm match held at Alumni Hall. A free live stream of the match will be available on NavySports.com(.)
