ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had a busy weekend, competing in four away competitions this past Saturday and Sunday.

N.Y. Maritime College was host to the MAISA Fall Women's Championship, which featured 16 teams from Navy's conference fighting for seven berths at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship at Connecticut College from November 11-12.

Strong currents and very light winds kept the fleet on shore for most of the weekend, however. Some wind filled in at the end of the day on Saturday, allowing for three races per division that day. Only one more race was able to be completed on Sunday, but it was just enough to have an official regatta. Navy wound up sixth overall and earned a berth at the ACCs.

Jessica McJones and Karma Richards came in sixth in A Division while Brittney Slook and Emma Remis were third in B. Anna Cutler was also on hand.

Close to the women, another group of Midshipmen were competing at the Kings Point Dinghy Open, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. After no racing on the first day, this event was also only able to get off four races per division.

Navy finished second overall out of 18 teams, just one point behind Georgetown. Parker Loftus and Sarah Barkley finished third in A Division while Jimmy Madigan and Holly Koerwer claimed the divisional victory in B.

The Central Fall Open, hosted by Washington College was another light wind regatta where only three races were completed per division. Navy finished third overall out of 16 teams. Tyler Fleig and Alyson Wade came in fourth in A division while Sean Linden and Abigail Richardson won B.

The one event of the weekend that had some wind was the Hoyt Trophy, a major Interconference Regatta hosted by Brown University. This event featured 18 of the very best teams from around the country, extremely close racing and near perfect conditions the first day, with temperatures in the low 70s and 8-14 knots of breeze out of the south with very small shifts. Navy stayed within touch of the leaders for most of the first day and came on strong in the last set to claim the lead going into day two.

On Sunday, the light wind found its way to Providence and the final races were completed in 3-5 knots after a lengthy delay. The Midshipmen slid down the leader board a bit in the tight fleet and wound up fifth overall. Gary Prieto and Ana Mier finished fifth in A Division, Peter Hogan and Kelly Milliken were sixth in B and Kent Mathes was also on hand.
