ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team concluded play at the Navy Gold Invitational Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids were joined at the three-day event by players from Binghamton, Longwood, Loyola, Mount St. Mary's, Princeton and Saint Peter's.

Navy advanced six of its eight singles players into the championship half of the A, B and C draws as well as five of its six entered teams into the championship half of the lone doubles bracket.

"Overall it was another good event for the team to play," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "A number of the players are making a strong push toward the starting lineup to begin the spring season with their consistent practice habits and tournament results."

Both Romesh Kahatapitiya (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, Va.) reached the championship match of the C flight while Aries Wong (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) and Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.) each advanced to the third-place match of the A draw. Neither of those two matches were contested. Also reaching a third-place match was Greg Durham (So., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) in the B flight. His last match of the weekend also was not played.

"Aries and Andrew had good runs to the semifinals in the top flight of singles," said Garner. "Aries had a terrific win in his quarterfinal match, coming back in the third set to win, 7-5. Although Andrew lost in the semifinals to the eventual champion of the A flight, their match was filled with a lot of highlight reel offensive and defensive shots.

"Peter also had a strong singles tourney, winning three matches in a row by playing very well from the baseline and the net."

Additionally, Josh Martin (Sr., Foley, Ala.) qualified for the fifth-place match in the C flight (match was not played), Matthew Lee (So., San Diego, Calif.) lost in the consolation final of the A bracket and Andrey Majkic (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) placed 13th in the B draw.

Navy's Seth McNair (Jr., McLean, Va.) also posted a 3-1 record in the D flight that featured a series of round robin matches between the players in the draw.

The tandem of Lohrbach and Ton had the best showing of Navy's six doubles teams as the pair placed seventh in the 32-team draw. Also going deep into the bracket were the teams of Durham and Wong (10th place), Lee and Majkic (11th), Kahatapitiya and Martin (14th) and Zach Jennings (So., Snellville, Va.) and Walker Sims (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) (16th).

"It was a very good weekend for Romesh in both events," said Garner. "Winning his first three matches in singles was impressive as was some very good doubles play alongside Josh."

Navy will play in two more tournaments this fall season, with one of them being the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic this coming weekend in Sarasota, Fla.
