LAS VEGAS - Jonny Tang of the Navy gymnastics team wrapped up competing at the 2017 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday night in Las Vegas. One of 43 gymnasts from across the nation at the prestigious event, Tang was vying for a spot on the 2017 U.S. National Team. At the conclusion of Saturday's finals, Tang finished 22nd overall with a two-day total of 154.00 points.
After netting 77.55 points during Thursday's preliminary round of all-around action, Tang took to the gym on Saturday for a second round of competition. The senior started on the high bar and repeated his Thursday performance with an identical 12.85-point effort. Next up were the floor exercise and pommel horse where he improved both of his scores to the tune of a 13.5 on the floor and 12.75 on the pommel. Over the final three rotations, Tang notched a 11.85 on the rings, 12.75 on the vault and 12.75 on the parallel bars.
In the two-day standings, his cumulative 25.7 on the high bar ranked 13th best, while his 26.75 on the floor exercise was tied for 17th overall.
Tang was immediately surrounded in the all-around standings by Andrew Botto of Iowa and Michael Burns of Penn State in 20th and 21st place and Minnesota's Jalon Stephens and Penn State's Dominic DiFulvio in 23rd and 24th.
Oklahoma's Yul Moldauer won the all-around competition as he edged Stanford's Akash Modi, 171.75-171.05.
Tang and his Navy teammates will be back in action this coming Saturday with a home competition versus No. 5 Penn State. The Mids and Nittany Lions will face off in Macdonough Hall on Feb. 25 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
