No. 12 Navy Readies for Annual All-Academy Championship

Feb. 9, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 2017 edition of the All-Academy Championship this Saturday is shaping up to be a tight and competitive gymnastics matchup between the Air Force, Navy and Army West Point service academy programs. Currently ranked ninth, 12th and 13th respectively in the latest NCAA standings, the three squads will meet up in San Antonio as part of the three-day San Antonio Gymnastics Invitational. The Mission Concepcion Sports Complex will play host to the competition that is slated to begin at 2:00 pm ET (1:00 pm-CT).

Last year in Atlanta, the Mids came out and posted a school-record 424.1 score to finish second overall, trailing only the championship winning Air Force squad that turned in a 427.35 score. Army West Point placed third, 1.25 points behind Navy with a 422.85 final score.

Across the board Navy posted high scores in the event rotations as the Mids' floor exercise, pommel horse and high bar lineups recorded then- season-high totals, while the rings and vault squads posted 70.0-plus aggregates. This was the first meet in 2016 with four rotational scores of 70.0-plus.

Navy's 424.1-point score would prove pivotal down the line as it helped the Mids break a tie with Army at the ECAC Championships in earning the conference's automatic NCAA bid.

Last Time Out

Last Saturday in the 2017 Star Meet between Army and Navy, the Mids were upended, 405.85-402.8. Close throughout the contest, Navy held a slim 0.1-point lead after the fourth rotation, vault, before Army earned a 1.05-point victory on the parallel bars and a 2.1-point advantage on the high bar to take the lead and conclude the event as the victor. The host Black Knights' depth and experience proved pivotal as Midshipmen gymnasts secured the top individual scoring position in four of the six events, but just not enough other top-five finishes.

In its victory, Army exceeded its season average by 12.8 points, while Navy surpassed its season average as well, to the tune of 3.37 points.

As a team, Navy posted a 65.9 on the floor exercise, 64.7 on the pommel horse, 67.9 on the rings, 70.65 on the vault, 66.4 on the parallel bars and 67.25 on the high bar.

Individually, the trio of Jonny Tang, Lucas Beltran and Wyatt LaPointe led the Mids' effort. All three gymnasts finished atop the scoring column for at least one event. Tang was the meet's top all-arounder with a score of 82.1, as well as the top parallel bar competitor with a 14.25. Beltran posted top scorers on the floor exercise and the vault with respective scores of 13.85 and 14.9. LaPointe rounded out the top finishers for Navy as he recorded a 14.55 on the rings to outscore the field by 0.8 points.

For his efforts, Beltran was chosen as the ECAC Rookie of the Week.
