March 1, 2017 DANBURY, Conn. - Senior all-around gymnast Jonny Tang (Malvern, Pa.) was honored late Tuesday by the ECAC as the conference's Corvias Men's Gymnast of the Week for his efforts against Penn State on Saturday.
Taking on the sixth-ranked team in the nation, Tang turned in one of his best performances of the season with an 82.3-point score in the all-around competition. The 82.3 was his second-best result of the year in the multi-event discipline. Amongst individual events, Tang was the top performing Navy gymnast on four apparatus as he finished first overall on the floor exercise (14.1), second on the high bar (13.7) and fourth on both the vault (14.05) and parallel bars (13.7).
This is the 10th ECAC weekly honor of Tang's career and the fifth award for Navy as a program in 2017. Prior to this week, Tanner West (Gymnast, Jan. 24), Tang (Gymnast, Jan. 31), Wyatt LaPointe (Specialist, Jan. 31) and Lucas Beltran (Rookie, Feb. 7) have all taken home accolades.
In the national NCAA Gymnast of the Week ballot, Tang finished runner-up to Oklahoma's Colin Van Wicklen.
Tang and his teammates will be back in action this weekend with a pair of ECAC road meets. First on Friday, March 3, the Mids and Tribe of William & Mary will face off in Williamsburg, Va. before the team heads north to Massachusetts and a tri-team meet with Army and Springfield at the Pride's Blake Arena.
