March 2, 2017 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy gymnastics team will ramp up its slate of late season action with a pair of road ECAC conference meets this weekend. Beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at William & Mary and wrapping at Springfield College on Sunday at 1 p.m., the Mids will have two opportunities to improve their ranking in the NCAA standings as they currently hold the 11th-best scoring average of 403.817.
Friday's competition between the Mids (6-7) and the Tribe (6-2) will be the second half of a home-and-home series as Navy took a 409.4-401.3 victory in Annapolis on Jan. 28.
On Sunday in Springfield, Navy will be one of three teams competing as the host Pride (2-11) will also welcome Army (6-5) to Blake Arena. Navy dropped its head-to-head meet with Army on Feb. 4 by 3.05 points, 405.85-402.80. The Mids and Pride have yet to go head-to-head this season.
In open competitions over the first two weekends of the 2017 season, Navy faced off with Army and Springfield at the West Point Open on Jan. 13. At the seven-team meet, Army finished third with 393.55 points, while Navy was fifth at 391.25 and Springfield sixth at 390.55. The next weekend in Annapolis, Navy outscored William & Mary and Springfield at the 2017 Navy Open. The Mids netted 397.65 points to finish first amongst the four-team field. William & Mary was second with a 390.60 and Springfield was third at 389.70.
Last Time Out
Competing at Macdonough Hall on Saturday, Feb. 25, Navy welcomed Penn State in the first dual meet between the two programs in Annapolis since 2002. In the first "five-up, five-count" scoring meet of the year, the Mids posted their third best score of the year with 399.25 points. The No. 6 Nittany Lions earned the head-to-head win with a result of 409.4-399.25.
As a team, Navy scored 66.20 on floor exercise, 64.55 on the pommel horse, 67.80 on the rings, 68.60 on the vault and 67.0 in the parallel bars. The Mids outscored the Nittany Lions on the high bar, 65.1 to 63.7.
Individually, Jonny Tang was Navy's top all-around performer as he finished in the top five in the floor exercise, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Tang outdid all 10 athletes in the floor results with a score of 14.2. The senior came in a close second on the high bar at 13.7, which was just 0.25 points of Penn State's Sam Zakutney first-place performance. Tang placed fourth on both the vault (14.05) and parallel bars (13.70).
For his efforts, Tang was selected as the ECAC's Men's Gymnast of the Week. The honor was the 10th of Tang's storied career as a Midshipmen.
