Postseason Action Ahead for Navy at USAG Collegiate Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy gymnastics team begins its run of postseason action this weekend with the two-day USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships. Hosted by the University of Washington at Everett Community College's Walt Price Student Fitness Center, the team championship event will take place on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET before the competition wraps up on Saturday with the individual event finals starting at 10:00 p.m. ET. Navy will be one of seven teams vying for championship hardware in the Pacific Northwest.

The field for the 2017 USAG Collegiate Championships consists of No. 10 Air Force, No. 12 Navy, No. 13 William & Mary, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 16 Springfield College, No. 18 Temple and No. 19 Washington. The field features four varsity teams, as well as three club programs in ASU, Temple and Washington.

The top six scorers in the all-around competition and in each event final will earn USAG All-America honors.

Last Year at the USAG Championships

Competing against a 10-team field at Springfield College's Blake Arena, the Mids recorded a score of 412.85 to place third overall. Navy finished behind the seven-time consecutive champions Air Force (425.35) and Army West Point (413.85).

The rest of the top five in the field of varsity and club teams included William & Mary in fourth place at 405.1 and Arizona State, a club squad, in fifth at 403.65.

Individually, Navy had six different gymnasts record top-eight results and subsequent spots in the individual event finals. All-around performer, Jonny Tang led the way with a fourth-place finish in the all-around and qualifying scores for the floor exercise, rings, parallel bars and high bar event finals on Saturday. Then-seniors, Eric Poletti and Connor Westrick each earned their way into two event finals. Class of 2016 grads Michael Dorsey and Mitchell Larios, as well as Andy Jones qualified one time each.

In the event finals, Larios (vault), Poletti (rings) and Tang (floor exercise) all won USAG National Championships. Overall each of the six gymnasts that competed in the finals came away with at least one top-six podium finish.

Last Time Out

Navy concluded its regular season on last Friday night with a road loss at Air Force. Competing in the Cadet West Gym, the Mids used a lineup heavy on underclassmen and reserves versus the Falcons with postseason action just one week away. At the completion of the meet, Air Force was victorious, 407.35-382.9.

Frank Bradley and Noah Beeman highlighted Navy's individual performances against Air Force as Bradley won the vault event and tied for third on the floor exercise. Beeman competed in five events and notched top-five results in three: the vault, pommel horse and parallel bars.

As a team, Navy posted a 66.4 on the floor exercise, 59.65 on the pommel horse, 63.1 on the rings, 68.8 on the vault, 66.85 on the parallel bars and 58.1 on the high bar.

For his efforts against the Falcons, Bradley was recognized by the ECAC as the conference's Rookie of the Week.
