March 27, 2017 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three team racing regattas this past weekend and won the Admiral Moore Team Race at SUNY Maritime. Navy also closed out the week ranked fourth in the country in two separate polls for coed sailing.
The major event of the weekend was the Admiral Moore Team Race at SUNY Maritime College. With Maritime hosting the conference team racing championship in two weeks, this was a good chance for Navy to learn the waters and face some tough competition there.
Many of the top teams in MAISA were in attendance and a number of top ranked teams from other conferences joined in on the action, resulting in a very tough event. Fluky winds and strong currents in the East River added to the challenge and the fleet remained tight throughout the weekend. Navy finished the initial round robin of the 10-team regatta with a 6-3 record and advanced on to the top-six championship round.
The Midshipmen went 4-1 in the final round and found themselves at the top of the standings in a three-way tie for first with Stanford and Georgetown. Since the teams had all met twice, the first tiebreak was total wins when the tied teams met. Navy came out first overall since we beat Georgetown twice and Stanford once, claiming the 2017 Admiral Moore Trophy. Stanford finished second with Georgetown third, one win ahead of Charleston in fourth.
Sailing for Navy were Patrick Snow, Gary Prieto, Peter Hogan, Molly Robertson, Ana Mier and Sarah Barkley. Michael Madigan and Hannah Hughes were there in reserve ad played a big part in the winning effort.
This year was the first time that the Hanbury Trophy was held as a team race regatta at Christopher Newport University. Navy was one of six teams in attendance and all were greeted to terrific conditions on the first day. Warm and sunny with steady winds, three full round robins were completed in just one day. Sunday, however was a different story and after hours of waiting for wind, it never filled in and the results from Saturday stood as final.
Navy wound up third out of six with a 10-5 overall record. Navy's team consisted of Hamrick Morgan, Tyler Fleig, Nicholas Gartner, Jessica McJones, Karma Richards and Brittney Slook.
The Aaron Szambecki Team Race was held at Old Dominion University. This event is always special for a number of reasons. It is a very well run regatta that falls on ODU's parent's weekend, adding to the spectacle and interest. It also remembers a sailor on the ODU team, Aaron Szambecki, who tragically took his own life shortly after graduation. When another ODU sailor, Gray Kiger, met the same fate earlier this year, ODU decided to dedicate this year's regatta to Gray's memory and to suicide prevention and awareness. With the Kiger family in attendance, another terrific regatta was sailed this year.
The eight teams were treated to three full rounds of umpired team racing in beautiful conditions and in the feel good story of the spring season, ODU was able to take home the victory for Gray and Aaron. A young Navy team finished sixth overall with an 8-13 record.
Navy's sailors were Jimmy Madigan, Parker Loftus, Max Brill, Manuel Inserni-Pagan, Kent Mathes, and Emma Remis.
